she was born on january fifth, 1986 in copenhagen, denmark and was raised in banglore. she was born to konkani-speaking parents ujjala and father (once a famous badminton player) prakash padukone. she has another younger sister by the name of anisha padukone.
growing up: as a teenager, deepika played badminton in national level championships, but left her career in sport to become a fashion model. her family relocated to bangalore, india, when deepika was only a year old. she was educated at bangalore's sophia high school and completed her pre-university education at mcc (mount carmel college). she admits to being socially awkward as a child, and not having many friends. the main focus of her life during that time was badminton, and badminton only, which she played competitively from a young age. deepika continued to pursue a career in badminton throughout her school years, and played the sport in national level championships. in the tenth grade, she changed focus and decided to become a fashion model. she later explained, "i realised that i was playing the game only because it ran in the family. so, i asked my father if i could give up the game and he wasn't upset at all." and in '04 she began a full-time career as a model under the tutelage of prasad bidapad.
