Panthera tigris amoyensis

In the 1950s there were about 4,000 south China tigers in the world.
They were hunted in their native home as a pest, and as a result of that, in only a few decades, they're almost extinct. Scientists declare them "functionally extinct", even. It was 1979 before China banned the hunting of the south China tigers. By 1996 there were only 30-60 individuals left on earth. And all of them live in zoos. They eat monkeys, birds, small buck, and so on. There hasn't been one sighted in the wild for 25 years. The good news is there are plans to reintroduce captive south China tigers back into the wild in South Africa. Another piece of good news is that for the first time in 100 years the tiger population is increasing. But this is still a powerful reminder that man can kill. And more than just these tigers.
