"Hey girl!" Lacey greeted cheerily as I jumped into her silver car.
"Hey."
Lacey knew just by my tone of voice that something was wrong, "Why the long face? You have a date and we're having girl time!"
I sighed, "You remember Diana right?"
"That fake Barbie girl who is all over that boss of yours?"
"Yeah. Somehow she knew I had a date with Joseph Friday. She also threatened me to stay away from him or she'll get the CEO to get rid of me."
"That's awful! So, you changed your mind on the date?"
"No," I sighed, "I have to go."
Earlier that afternoon I had tried to call Joseph to cancel. But the moment I opened my mouth to say anything it clamped closed. I couldn't undo his wish.
"Well," said Lacey," let's get you a super hot dress to really wow Joseph. There's no way he'd go for a girl like Diana when has his own cutie on his arm."
I gave Lacey a grin, but on the inside I was really starting to doubt myself. Why wouldn't he go for Diana? She's so much prettier than me. Joseph is too gorgeous to go for an awkward girl like me. Not to mention that she came from a rich family just like Joe. They'd pretty much be the perfect couple.
Lacey pulled into the parking lot of a little cute boutique just as I finished that last thought.
"Come on," she said, "This is the perfect store for you. And stop thinking Joseph is going to go for Diana. You about made yourself cry."
"How'd you know that I was thinking that?" I questioned as I got out of her car.
"I'm your best friend. Do you really think I don't know how you're feeling?"
I laughed, "Yeah, I guess you're right."
"I'm always right!" she laughed as she grabbed my arm and pulled me into the boutique, "Now let's have some fun!"
There were tons of dresses packed into the little store. Lacey and I took turns trying them all on. She ended up falling in love with a blue satin gown and bought it for herself. She looked as if she was straight off the red carpet. I, on the other hand, could not find a single one that I thought was just right for the occasion. We decided to look through the racks one more time just in case we missed anything.
"Hey, Marie!" Lacey stuck her head through the rack of dresses I was looking through.
I screamed.
Lacey almost fell over laughing, "You shoulda seen your face!"
"I can't believe you did that!" I cried.
"I had to get your attention somehow. Come around to the other side of this rack. I think I found something you might like."
I obeyed her and went over to her side. When I got there she had a cheesy grin plastered on her face.
"What?" I questioned nervously, "Are you gonna hit me with something?"
"No!" laughed Lacey, "But look!" She held up a beautiful dark red dress. It was knee-length, made of a pretty satin fabric. It was clinched at the waist and decorated on the bottom with a little lace the same color as the dress. It was simple, yet elegant.
"That's gorgeous!" I cried excitedly.
"And would look fabulous with your gorgeous porcelain skin and dark brown hair. It would definitely bring out those bright blue eyes of yours as well."
