Chapter Three: Skittles and Music
"Give them to me!"
"What? No!"
"Well why not?"
"Because!"
"That's not even an answer!"
"Yes it- oof!" Lucas wrestles me to the ground as he reaches for the- ahem- my bag of skittles.
"AHHHH! HELP! THEIF! MY CANDY! HELP!" I smack Lucas' hands away from my skittles and attempt to wiggle my way out from under him. He stares down at me with a blank face and calmly says, "Give. Me. The skittles."
"Never!"
"Whatever. You asked for it." I freeze and look up at him with wide eyes. Oh no. No no no.
"You wouldn't." I whisper.
He smirks, "Oh, I will." With that his fingers fly to my sides and I burst into unwanted laughter. Tears flow freely from my eyes and I can feel my grip loosen on my bag of skittles as they tumble onto the floor beside me. With quick hands, Lucas scoops up the bag and hops off of me, laughing like a maniac.
"YES. They're mine! Mine I tell you! Miiiine!" He looks at me and for a split second I think he's going to help me off the ground but then he runs for my bedroom door and down the hallway. I scramble up and race after him, tackling him to the floor of the living room in a pile of laughter and skittles.
"Kids! Settle down! Jesus Christ. It sounds like a bunch of dang elephants in here." My dad emerges from the kitchen, spatula in hand, and shakes his head at us. "Are you guys packed?"
I climb off of Lucas and he sits up, clutching the bag of skittles tightly in his hands. We look at each other sheepishly and then back at my dad.
"No..."
"Then go get packed! Breakfast will be ready soon and we're leaving right after to go to the campground. We can't do that if you guys aren't packed. Now shoo!" My dad shakes his free hand at us then disappears back into the kitchen. The smell of bacon and pancakes wafts through the house and Lucas and I hurry back to my room.
On the way I knock on Gabe's closed bedroom door and recite to him what our dad just told me and Lucas.
Once back inside my bedroom Lucas jumps onto my bed and lays spread eagle on his back. Last night David brought Lucas over so that he could stay the night and then come camping with us for a few days. We're going camping at the same place we went last summer and we're all super excited.
"Well, I'm already packed," Lucas points in the general direction of his neon green back pack without moving from his position then continues, "So it's just up to you, butt nugget." He snickers at his nickname for me and I pick up the closest pillow by me before chucking it at his head.
"Ow."
"Shut your pie hole." I reply before reaching for my travel bag so I could begin packing once again. Did I mention I hate packing?
Because I do.
I begin stuffing clothes and other essentials that I'll need for the few days we'll be camping into my bag. Every once in a while I glance up to see what Lucas is doing only to find him playing some game on his phone and occasionally muttering "Die, die, die!" to himself.
After about ten to fifteen minutes I finally finish and jump onto my bed next to Lucas with a big sigh. As soon as I lay down though I hear my dad call from the kitchen.
"Break-fast! Hurry up before it gets cold."
"See ya, I'm out." I push Lucas off the bed and jump over him as I head out the door and towards the kitchen. At the table, I sit down beside my dad and begin eating. A few minutes later Lucas and Gabe stumble in, shoving each other and laughing before sitting down and digging in also.

After breakfast we all grab our bags and head out to the car. My dad had packed all the food in a cooler and stuffed it in the trunk along with the tent, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, and all the other supplies we will need for camping.
Once we're all inside the mustang, Gabriel in shotgun and Lucas and I in the back, my dad starts the engine and backs out of the driveway. After about five minutes of peaceful silence, the annoying pest sitting next to me starts whispering.
"Jade." I ignore him.
"Jade." Ignore.
"Jade, Jade, Jade." He starts poking me in the arm. My eye twitches.
Just ignore him.
The annoying poking continues before I turn to him and growl, "What?!"
He smiles at me cheekily before poking my face and asking me in a whisper, "Bring your headphones?"
I look at him from the corner of my eye suspiciously. "Yes. Why?"
He gestures for me to get them so I reach down and unzip my bag. I dig around for a minute before my fingers find what they're looking for and I pull out my head phones. I glance at Lucas before placing them into the palm of his outstretched hand.
He holds up a finger, motioning for me to wait then pulls out his phone and plugs in my headphones. His finger scrolls across the screen for a minute and then Lucas looks over at me. He hands me one of the ear buds and shoves the other one into his ear. I copy his movements and then smile.
Of course he would pick this song. It was one of our shared favorites. We both lean back in our seats and I close my eyes, listening to the music flowing into my ear. I lean my head on Lucas' shoulder and relax until he speaks.
"Just don't drool on me this time."
