Chapter Seven: Sand War
I hide behind Alex as a wave of sandballs come flying our way from Lucas and Gabe.
"Duck!" Alex warns before diving into the water beside us. My eyes widen and I plug my nose before dodging the oncoming sand and jump into the lake after Alex.
We both come up out of the water and Alex instructs me to get some ammo, a.k.a. sand. We both reach into the water and grab handfuls of sand from the lake bottom.
"So, how old are you?" Alex asks me as he throws a sandball at Lucas who squeals and jumps out of the way.
I dodge sand being thrown at me from Gabe, "I'm fifteen. What about you?"
I chuck a sandball in Lucas' direction and listen to Alex as he answers.
"Cool. I'm sixteen. What grade are you going to be in?" After he asks this he laughs at Gabe as he falls into the water dramatically, clutching his chest from being hit.
"I'll be a sophomore."
"A year younger than me but going into a grade above me." He shoots me a smile, his eyes twinkling. I take this time to ask him a question.
"So, how long are you staying here?"
A sandball smacks me in the shoulder and I wince before bending down to get more ammo."I leave tomorrow morning. What about you?" A hint of sadness is laced in his words and I can't help but frown a little.
"Same. We leave in the morning too." Tomorrow would be our third day camping and my dad wants to leave in the morning to avoid a lot of traffic. Plus, our reserved time for our campsite ends in the afternoon.
"Oh." He looks down at the water for a few seconds before looking back up, mischief shining in his light blue eyes. He looks at me and a small smile spreads across his lips. "Watch this, Pigtails." With that he dives into the lake, water spraying my legs and flying into the air. I try to follow his path underwater but fail as the water is too dark for me to see him.
Wait, did he just call me pigtails?
I reach a hand up to my braided hair and smile.
All of the sudden, something smacks into my thigh and I look over at a laughing Lucas with wide eyes. I had momentarily forgotten that we were in the middle of a sand war.
As I watch Lucas and Gabriel laugh, someone silently emerges from the water behind them with dark sand dripping out of their two outstretched hands. I laugh as Alexander squishes the sand into first Lucas' and then Gabe's hair. They both shriek before jumping back and diving into the water, furiously rubbing at their hair.
Alex smiles triumphantly at me and I beam back at him before lifting my arm. My sandball hits him square in the chest and the look on his face is priceless. He looks at me in shock before smirking and yells across the water for me to hear.
"You are so gonna regret that!" At this Lucas and Gabe burst from the lake and stand beside Alex, who shoots me an impish grin before bringing the two boys into a huddle.
I can't figure out what they're saying and I don't think I want to find out. Whatever it is, it can't be good. I slowly begin to back into the water until it's no longer at mid-thigh, but up to my shoulders.
As the three boys turn around to face me, my eyes widen. Each boy is holding up handfuls of sand and sporting an evil grin.
All at once they charge me, letting loose loud battlecries as they run, lake water splashing everywhere.
