Chapter Five: The First Day

Two hours later, give or take a few minutes, the three of us trample back to our campsite for lunch. As we walk into camp, my dad looks up at us from his seat by the fire that he must've started while we were at the lake. He looks down at his watch then back up at us and grins.

"Right on time! I bet you guys are hungry, huh?"

Lucas groans, "So hungry. Who knew swimming could take so much energy out of you?"

I shake my head and my dad laughs. Lucas and Gabe walk over to the fire and plop down into two of the fold out chairs sitting in a circle around the fire pit. Within a few seconds they're deep in conversation about some thing I have no clue about.

I make my way towards the picnic table, grab a red solo cup from the tub of supplies sitting on the bench, then walk to the edge of the table and stand in front of the cooler that rests there to fill my cup up with water. After I take a long drink, I head over to the others and take a seat in the last of the four chairs sitting around the fire.

"So... hot dogs?" My dad asks, looking around at each of us. Lucas' face lights up at the mention of food.

"Yes puh-lease." Gabe replies. My dad gets up to retrieve the hot dogs and roasting forks so we can cook them.

"So if we're having hot dogs for lunch, what's for dinner?" I ask, curious.

"Well, I was thinking hamburgers. What do you think?"

"Sounds g-"

"Oh, hamburgers definitely sound good." Lucas cuts me off. I shoot him a glare and he grins at me cheekily from across the fire.

"Great! We can have some corn-on-the-cob along with them, too." My dad suggests, returning with the hot dogs.

"Mmm, I love me some corn." Gabe hums while rubbing his stomach in a circular motion with one hand. Lucas and I laugh and my dad hands out the roasting forks, followed by the hot dogs.

"What are you waiting for? Get to cooking!"

.::-*-::.

After lunch, Lucas randomly speaks up.

"I have to pee."

"So go to bathroom. You know where it is." I tell him.

"But Jaaaade," Lucas whines. "I don't want to go up there by myself. Come with me?" He pouts, looking at me with big, hopeful eyes.

"Oh no. Don't give me the puppy dog eyes." He knew I couldn't refuse if he gave me those.

Lucas sticks out his bottom lip.

I sigh.

"Fine! I'll come with you!" I say, giving in.

Why must I be so weak?

He cheers and grabs my arm, tugging me in the direction of the bathroom.

"Slow down!" I tell him, laughing. "We'll be right back, going to the bathroom!" I shout over my shoulder in the direction of the campsite.

" 'Kay! Don't fall in!" I laugh at my dad's response. The sad part is that if you aren't careful, you probably will fall into the toilets here. They are pretty big and are literally just a toilet seat over a large hole in the ground.
