Chapter Six: Meeting Alex

The warm summer air, that smells faintly of sunscreen and bug spray, breezes by, tickling my skin and making me smile. I dig my toes deeper into the warm sand and happily watch as it glides over my toes and sinks back to the ground. I reach up and brush random wisps of hair out of my face. I'd braided my hair into two pigtails in order to keep it from tangling once I get in the lake.

Lucas and Gabriel are already in the water, splashing each other and laughing. They'd put me in charge of setting up 'camp', so to speak, after they so nicely threw their towels and discarded tee shirts randomly onto the beach for me to find. They were too excited for their own good. I honestly didn't mind though. Just shook my head, smiled, and picked up their things before finding a good spot to place down our towels.

"Jade, come on! The water's purrrr-fect." a lazy smile spreads across Lucas' face as he sinks down into the water after shouting up at me. I laugh and jog over to where he is at the waters edge.

"Oh, so you're a cat now? You know, I always suspected something was a little off about you..." I cock my head to the side and furrow my eyebrows in amusement.

He looks up at me, amusement sparkling in his eyes, and claws the air like a cat with one hand. "Me-ow." He then sinks lower into the water so I can only see his eyes and the top of his head. I smirk and kick out my foot, splashing water into his face.

He bursts out of the water and tackles me into a bear hug before tugging us both into the water, me shrieking and him laughing.

"Let go of me, you big oaf!" I laugh.

"Never!" Lucas yells before we both fall into the water. I emerge spluttering and laughing and Lucas makes a big deal of jumping out of the water and gasping for air repeatedly.

"Stop exaggerating." I tell him with a roll of my eyes and a smile. At this moment Gabe decides to rush over and I laugh at the sight of him. He's doing high knees with his arms held out on either side of him for balance, splashing water everywhere.

"Guys, guys, guys!"

Lucas attempts to hold back his laughter. "What, what, what?"

As Gabe high-knees by he pushes Lucas slightly on the shoulder. "TAG!" Then he runs off before face planting into the sand. I burst into laughter and Lucas slaps his hand onto his face. Gabe rises, covered in sand, before looking at Lucas over his shoulder and running into the lake.

"Oh, it's on." I glance beside me at Lucas only to find empty space. Confused, I frantically look around me only to see him running into the lake after Gabe. My lips curve up into a grin and I shake my head before heading down to the water myself.

The cool water of the lake feels nice after standing in the hot sand for so long. I walk in until the waters up to mid-thigh and then I stop, trailing my hands just over the surface of the lake. Swirling my fingers around in the water, I watch Lucas and Gabe as they mess around. I sigh happily, I love it here.

I tilt my head up to the sky with my eyes closed and the sun begins to warm my face. Smiling to myself, I stand straight again and check on Lucas and Gabriel to make sure they are okay before looking behind me to check our towels.

When I turn around to check our towels, movement at the top of the beach catches my eye. Two boys that look to be around my age ride up to the edge of the little hill on their bikes.

One boy has short black hair and pale skin while the other has shaggy dark brown hair and is slightly tanned. Curious, I watch them from my spot in the lake. I don't usually see kids my age around here at this campground. The kids that are often here are mostly ten years old or younger.

As I watch the two they begin conversing and the boy with short black hair shakes his head before turning his bike around and disappearing from my sight. Suddenly, the brown haired boy turns his head and meets my gaze. He tilts his head to the side slightly and my eyes widen before I quickly spin around.

Oh my gosh, we just made eye-contact. Crap crap crap.

Calm. Down.

I take a deep breath in through my nose then slowly let it out through my mouth and relax my shoulders. I blink once. Twice. Check on Lucas and Gabe again to see them still laughing and carrying on before turning my head to my right and almost have a heart attack.

The boy is beside me in the water. Well, not exactly beside me, but twenty feet away.

How'd he get there so fast?

My heartbeat quickens. Why? I have no clue. I don't even know the guy so why am I freaking out? I don't know.

I watch him from the corner of my eye, curious to see what he's doing. He stands in the lake, staring down at the water intently, like he was frozen in place. Then, very slow at first, he starts to bend over the water before lunging forward and shoving his hands into the lake. After a second he pulls up out of the water and sighs. Confused now, I keep watching. A few seconds later he does it again.

What the heck is he doing?

"What the heck are you doing?" I blurt out. My eyes widen and I cover my mouth with my hand, frozen. Did I just say that out loud? Well, crap.

The boy glances at me before answering. "Catching fish."

"Wait, what?" I ask confused. He turns toward me and raises an eyebrow.

"I'm caching fish." He turns back around slowly and I continue to watch him. "Well, trying to at least." He mutters.

"Oh." As I say this Lucas and Gabe come trotting over and stand beside me.

"What is he doing?" Lucas asks me in a whisper, curious.

I glance at him and shrug, "Catching fish." The boy lunges into the water again and comes back up empty handed.

"Oh come on! Darn fish." The boy kicks at the water and pouts. A small smile spreads across my face at his outburst.

"Hey, need some help?" Lucas speaks up beside me. The boy turns toward us and shrugs.

"Sure. But you have to be very still and slow. And tell me if you see a fish." We nod and begin to look in the water. As we're searching, I find myself slowly drifting closer to the boy. When we're standing side by side I look over at him only to find him already looking at me. I blush.

"So what's your name?" The boy asks.

"I'm Jade. You?" I smile up at him. He is taller than me, but not by much. A few inches at the most.

He smiles back. "Alexander, but most just call me Alex."

"Hi." I look back down at the water and see something dark whizz by between my legs. "Fish!"

Alexander jerks his head to where I'm pointing and whispers, "Don't. Move."

The fish has stopped a little ways away from us but it is still close enough that if Alex is fast, he can catch it. He hunches over slightly and I watch as he lunges for the fish. When he surfaces the fish is no where in sight and I laugh.

"You missed."

Alex pouts and then splat. His eyes go wide and I look behind him to see Lucas standing a few feet away with an impish grin on his face as he holds up his now brown, sand covered hand. I hold back a laugh as Alex's eyes narrow and he bends down to scoop a handful of sand from the bed of the lake. His hand comes up dripping with dark, wet sand and he whips around then chucks the sandball at Lucas, hitting him square in the chest. I burst out laughing as Lucas yells.

"SAND WAR!"

So you've met Alex :) Pic of Him at the top / side. I couldn't find one exactly like how I imagine him but Logan Lerman is bomb so I thought, why not? Just picture him with Dark brown hair instead of black, and very light blue eyes.

Hope you enjoyed!

Until next time.
