Chapter Nine: Water GunsAbout half an hour of just laying around and soaking up the sun later, Lucas, Gabe, and I say goodbye to Alex and promise to hang out more after lunch. The three of us gather up our towels and the boy's shirts and begin heading back towards our campsite. I kick off my flip flops and walk barefoot, the heat of the cement road we're walking on feeling weirdly good against my feet.
As we're walking, Alex bikes past, shooting us a goofy grin while waving one hand at us enthusiastically. We all laugh and soon he's ahead of us, heading off in the direction of his own campsite.
Once Alex is out of earshot, Lucas gives me the side-eye and smirks then nudges me with his elbow. He opens his mouth and my eyes widen at his next words.
"Sooo.... Pigtails."
Blood quickly flushes my cheeks red and I nudge him back harder with my own elbow. "Oh, shut up." I pause for a second before adding, "You're just jealous."
Lucas guffaws and Gabe snickers. A small smile tugs the corners of my lips upward as I think of Alex's nickname for me. I don't really have any nicknames except for the one that my dad calls me, Queenie. Everyone just calls me by my real name, Jade, and I've been fine with it but I surprisingly enjoy how Alex likes to call me Pigtails. It's like our thing, I guess.
I drop my flip flops back onto the ground then quickly slip them on. We keep walking and I occasionally hear Lucas talking to himself and have to contain my laughter.
"Pigtails.... What even..." Lucas mutters, shaking his head. "Nicknames these days... I mean, come on, pigtails? Why not sugar fairy or apple flower or somethin'? You gotta be creative to win the ladies over, amirite Gabey poo?" Lucas turns to an oblivious Gabe at the end of his little rant.
I stifle my laugh as Gabe continues to stare off into space as he walks, daydreaming about who knows what, while Lucas just nods and says, "Yeah, I knew I was right. Thanks, Gabe."
At the sound of his name, Gabriel shoots Lucas a confused glance before shrugging and walking faster away from him.
I shake my head and smile at the two boys' behavior.
When we finally make it back to camp the three of us take turns in the tent changing into our clothes. Lucas goes first and when he emerges from the tent, I can't help but laugh at his choice of shirt. It's light blue with the words 'If you can't say anything nice we should probably be friends' written across it in bold, white letters. Gabriel puts on an Avenger's shirt and I wear a plain black tank top with jean shorts.
Once we're all done changing we head over to the fire, where my dad is sitting, and begin to cook our hot dogs for lunch.

Twenty minutes later, Lucas and I are sitting beside each other at the picnic table finishing up our hotdogs while Gabe and my dad sit in the chairs by the small fire. Dad said later tonight we would have a bigger fire but since it's still bright out, with it only being around two in the afternoon, he's going to keep it small.
