The news of the president's death effected Rowan more than she would have anticipated. Sure she wasn't Sterling's biggest fan, but having her as the president was all Rowan knew. No one else had ruled the foragers in the 19 years Ro
had been alive. Her breath hitched as she looked around at all of her friends.

"How did this happen?" Rowan questioned. She wasn't sad as much as she was shocked. The president had more security than anyone.

"Well," Max started. "Sterling wanted to boost her image so she went out with the hazmats that were looking for you. Long story short, they ran into grounders and only two made it back alive. Theo and one of the council members."

"Holy shit. Theo, are you okay?" Ro breathed, turning to the blonde.

"Yeah, I'll be good. I told Sterling to stay away from grounder territory, but she wouldn't listen to me. She got what she had coming if you ask me." Theo shook his head. The entire group knew of Theo's feelings towards President Sterling. When he was little, his father thought Sterling was being unfair sending such a young boy like Theo to the outside. However, Sterling needed more immune runners. So, in order to silence Theo's father, she executed him. It was cruel and unfair but no one could do anything about it or they would receive the same fate.

"So, who's taking over?" Rowan asked after a moment of silence.

"Most likely Xavier. He wants to declare war on the grounders, but I think even he knows we don't have enough people." Vaughn grumbled, bouncing his leg.

"There's going to be a meeting tonight. We should go." Faye offered. Rowan nodded biting her lip. She knew if Xavier did declare war on the grounders, her and her friends would have to be the first to volunteer. Since they were immune, part of their duty was to defend their people on the outside. It was both a blessing and a curse. Being able to fight for the foragers was great although it came with great danger.

Not long after, Faye, Vaughn, Theo and Amelia left to get ready for the meeting. Rowan stood up to leave also but was stopped by the sound of someone clearing their throat. Max stood next to the small refrigerator near the corner of the room, bottle of vodka in hand. "You didn't really think I was going to let you leave without celebrating your return, did you?"

"Max, we have to be at a meeting tonight." Ro chuckled making her friend roll his eyes.

"No harm in showing up a little tipsy." He shrugged, winking at the blonde before turning to pour them two shots.

"You're a bad influence on me, you know that?"

"Oh, the worst!" Max mocked handing his best friend a glass. He held his up, Rowan doing the same. "To my badass best friend who escaped certain death and still looks bomb after doing so, may I add."

"Amen." Ro smirked, downing the shot. The alcohol burned her throat but she welcomed the feeling nonetheless. Max was the only person out of the runners that Rowan could let loose with. Of course the others were fun, but nobody underground was as carefree as Max (his last name).
