May 16, 2006.
A perfect spring day.
The fog was so thick that he felt blinded. Lost.

Five years? It could have been worse. It was the first night of a new eternity. He had spent the night before at Sumter Correctional, being woken at five a.m. to be shipped here. Harold had already memorized every chip in the yellow paint. Yellow was supposed to soothe. Here it was just depressing.

There was yelling coming from down the hall.

So this would be his life. How exciting. How dreary. How he longed for the other side of the fence. How he longed for the greener side. The only grass in this prison grew up from between the cracks in the courtyard concrete. It would be just enough to remind him that he was still alive.

He missed his daughter.

He missed his wife more.

So many days before he could be near her. Or that little piece of her that hid inside Esther. Esther. Rebecca. He had etched their names in that yellow paint. Combined them into one name. The best of both worlds. Estecca. Beautiful. He couldn't wait to get out.

May 16, 2006.
A perfect spring day.
The sun was shinning brightly through the barred windows.
The only fog was in his mind. He had misplaced himself.
