Downtown
Mase CarterEvery Thursday morning like clock work Moe had me bring his mother fresh Daisies and a duffle bag of money for her to hide in the underground tunnel in her basement. Over the years, We had grown into an affectionate pair and would often spend the whole day together conversing about everything under the sun.
I was always irritable on Wednesday's because it seemed like Thursdays wouldn't arrive fast enough for us to be reunited. Seeing as Thursday was basically the only day Moe didn't have me running around town I usually picked up plenty of snacks and a picnic basket full of her favorite foods and wine for us to dine over later into the day.
She would always make a breakfast fit for a king and I guess over time I had become that. We talked on the phone all the time but I never wanted to step on my man's toes like that. It was bad enough I was breaking his mama back in. I didn't want to stab him in his back since he for some reason thought his parents would reunite one day.
I pulled up into the driveway and got all of our stuff out of the car and noticed she hadn't gotten her newspaper. As I walked closer, I noticed that all of her newspaper from the week were there and had a feeling something was wrong. She always picked up her newspaper.
I jogged up to her front door and twisted the knob and it was locked. She always unlocked for me on Thursdays so that she could tend to our breakfast. I beat on her door calling her name with a sinking feeling in my stomach that something was wrong. I threw our bags on the porch and kicked the oak wood door down.
As soon as I stepped through the door into the spacious home a funk so foul attacked my nostrils and nearly made me pass out. I immediately ran up the stairs taking two at a time hoping that my nose was misleading me,But the smell of death lingered throughout the home like the grim reaper when death was approaching.
I checked every room upstairs before I finally made it to her room and noticed her bathroom door was barely hanging on the hinge. The stench of stale piss invaded my nostrils terribly. When I didn't see her in there I rushed back down the stairs and into the main hall searching.
I didn't have to search long because there she lay slumped like a sack of potatoes bruised and battered. The scream that rose up my throat in a slow tempo shook my body fiercely. It felt like I was literally having a heart attack. Like someone had snatched my soul out of my body.
All of the plans that we had made that would never be done hurt me deeply. The powerful smell of her decaying body finally got to me and I emptied my stomach continuosly until there was nothing left to empty. With a broken heart and a shaky voice I called my stepson to let him know the devastating news.
"I found her dead." I said while breaking down All over again.
"Nigha, what the fuck are you talking about? Who dead?" Moe said while yelling into the phone.
"Your mom's man, somebody got to her." I said while crying heaving.
"I know Damn well yo ape looking ass ain't call me to play around on the phone. I outta let you eat my whole clip for saying some disrespectful shit like that. I'm in the middle of getting some good Pussy and you wanna tell sick ass jokes. What the--" I hung up the phone unwilling to sit there and continue to listen to Moe's bullshit.
I called the cops to alert them of the homicide and in the next ten you could hear sirens blaeing and cop cars covering the whole scene. I couldn't believe I had just lost the love of my life. The woman who was supposed to be my wife.
I walked outside and talked to the officers barely getting everything out without breaking down again. My heart painfully constricting inside my chest made me feel as if I was going to pass out at any moment. She had been sitting inside her house rotting for four days. I had been so busy that I hadn't noticed that she wasn't returning my calls. I had failed her as her man. I was so deep into my thoughts that I didn't even notice that Moe had made it to the scene.
He was pushing through the crowd like a wild man screaming," let me see her...let me see her now!"
You could hear the pain lacing his voice with as he fought anyone who got in his way. When he finally made it to the body bag he hurriedly unzipped and let out a deep guttural wail that tore at my heart even more before he fell to his knees.
I looked around our surroundings to see if I could spot Aleyah but she was nowhere in sight, so I went to comfort the only other person who would be hurting like I was. I had a deep nagging feeling that this would be the beginning of the end.
