Chapter Eight
The next morning, I wake up and throw on a pair of grey sweatpants and a black sweater with a hood on the back. I still feel pretty crappy about yesterday although I often try not to think about it. I grab my book bag and I exit the house before Lily or Aiden can see, do, or say anything to me. I speed walk all the way to school, attempting to ignore the piercing cold wind violently blowing against my skin. I plug in the ear buds of my iPod into my ears as I begin to scroll through my playlist.
After a few seconds of deciding what to listen to, I settle for Break by Three Days Grace. As I walk, I begin to nod my head to the beat of the music, my legs speeding down the sidewalk at the same tempo as the song. I start off humming the chorus of the song, gradually opening my mouth and letting the words flow out of me. I don't know why but I have become highly addicted to Three Days Grace lately. I guess I have always been a fan of them but once life really starts to kick you in the butt, bands like Three Days Grace, Seether, Breaking Benjamin, and 30 Seconds to Mars make it all better for me.
I arrive at Melbrook and head straight for English class. It is the first period of the day and boy, is this going to be a long day. I stride down the hallway, stopping at my locker and picking up my Chemistry book for my next class. I hug my book to my chest and look forward. I see Carrie walking down the hallway and I quickly avert my gaze hoping that she doesn't see me. I glance in Carrie's direction as she walks by me, wondering if my sister is with her. As I expected, I see Lily walking with her looking so radiant and happy. How can she not have a guilty conscience?
I breathe in a shaky breath, clearing my mind in my best efforts to forget about Carrie and her wretched ways. I walk into my English class, smiling at Mrs. Hall as I take my seat in the middle of the classroom. I place my white one inch binder onto my desk and I open it, gathering a black pen and a sheet of paper. I put my name and the date in the top right corner before setting my pen next to my page. I redirect my attention towards the teacher, watching her smile and greet other students as they come in.
I stare at Mrs. Hall, consumed in my thoughts, carefully studying her physical appearance. Her auburn hair is two inches above her shoulders and her eyes are brown. Mrs. Hall stands about five-nine and she is pretty. I'd say that she is one of the prettiest teachers here.
I look towards my fingers, suddenly feeling awkward for staring at my English teacher. Out of natural habit, I glance towards the door and as I am about to look away, someone catches my eye and I can't seem to peel my eyes away from them. My eyes follow the brunette as she smiles at Mrs. Hall and looks around the classroom for an open seat. Her eyes soon meet mine and she stands there frozen and I can tell she is searching for words. I watch as Megan hesitantly smiles and slowly waves in my direction. I look away, glancing behind me to make sure there isn't someone else there that she is saying hi to.
I divert my attention towards Megan, noticing her abrupt movement as she makes her way to a seat next to mine. As I watch her, I find myself straining to keep my eyes inside its sockets. I stare at her as she gets herself settled in her seat. Seeing her glance my way, she smiles. Why is she smiling at me and saying hi? Why does she want to sit next to me?
"H-Hey, Mia," She whispers hesitantly, plastering a small smile onto her face.
I smile at her, unsure of what I want to do or say, desperately trying to look beyond this fraudulent facade. I look to my hands, watching my fingers fiddle with each other. I blink a few times to cover up the tears that are now forming in my eyes. My vision becomes blurred and I begin to blink my eyes rapidly. I look towards the board where the teacher is ready to begin class. I watch Mrs. Hall through watery eyes, my hearing becoming impaired. I watch her small, pink lips move, knowing that words were emanating out of her mouth but her voice is vague.
