Chapter 6

I hear my alarm clock pierce my ears as it rings. I groan and reach a hand over the night stand at my bedside and I turn off the alarm. I reluctantly open my eyes and stare at the numbers written on the alarm. It is six o'clock, I have to wake up, and I am so happy that it is Friday. Tomorrow I can finally sleep in. This week has been too long and I am happy that it's over. I glance at my alarm clock again and I set my alarm for six thirty. It's time for a little nap.

Half an hour later I wake up and I rush to get ready. I slept through my alarm and I am almost late for school. I groan as I throw on a clean shirt and rush out of my room. I run downstairs and into the kitchen, picking out a bagel and eating it on my way out of the door.

It takes fifteen minutes to get to school and I make it right on time. I walk into my English class and take a seat. I stare up blankly at the teacher and watch her speak. I have never been one to like English class so everyday I find myself in a state of boredom. Thankfully, English is only a fifty minute period. I rest my head into my arms and close my eyes. I listen to the teacher speak and I hear her call my name. I quickly lift my head up and look at her.

"Mia," She says. "Would you care to tell us the answer?"

"Um," I begin to blush. "No."

"Next time, pay attention," She turns around and walks back to her desk and as she does, the class ooh's and ahh's after her. Oops.

English ends and after a few classes, I head to the courtyard to eat lunch. I find an empty table to sit at and I pull out a brown bag with a sandwich located on the inside. I pull out the sandwich and take a bite. I let out a small groan and realize that I haven't ate a sandwich in a long time. I take a few more bites before pulling out my iPod and plugging the ear buds into my ears. I listen to the song The Diary of Jane by Breaking Benjamin while I eat my sandwich. When I'm finished, I down the food with a quick swig of Dr. Pepper.

I put my trash into my bag and toss it into the garbage next to me. I take a sheet of paper out of my book bag and I write the words English Paper at the top. I write my name in the corner followed by the date. After a few seconds, I just stare at the paper. There is no way I'm going to get this done or get an A by the time school ends. Earlier today, I received my third quarter report card and boy, was it terrible. I feel a tap on my shoulder and I take out my ear buds.

"Yea?" I ask as I turn around.

"What's up?" Jayce smiles.

"Oh," I mutter. "It's you."

"Nice to see you too," He laughs.

"Sorry," I say. "I'm a little aggravated, can't you tell?"

Jayce looks me up and down.

"Oh yea," He says. "You look like a hot mess."

"Oh you're such a sweetheart," I say sarcastically, rolling my eyes.

"Well I did say hot," He smirks.

"Whatever," I mutter.

"Hey, no need to be gloomy," He puts his hands up in mock defense.

"Well," I start but then stop myself. "Never mind."

"No, what?" He presses.

"It's nothing, I just didn't have anything to say."

I stare at Jayce, looking him up and down. When he notices that I'm staring at him, he glares at me. My stomach turns and I quickly turn away. I fiddle with the edges of my paper in front of me as I try to figure some things out. A light suddenly flickers in my mind and I glare at Jayce, raising an eyebrow.
