"An ear shattering scream escapes my lungs as the scratches form scars across my body. The mermaids fight back at me, cold sorrow in their eyes, no their hearts. I can see their hearts through their eyes. The voice they sing clamps down on all the energy I have left in me. I can barely move, air is scarce and breathing is rare. I crawl up to the shore my energy and power fully drained out. I have seconds left and what I chose for my last words are not so nice: "A monster you are, a monster you've become, my beloved daughter," I spit blood back into her face as the rage in her smile never disappears."
These words were written by Lusephur Saint Charlesten. Lusephur had a child a wife and three more children. The four died leaving Lusephur with just his sixteen year old daughter. Lusephur wanted nothing more than to keep his daughter safe, so he tried to make a cradle potion, though he mixed the wrong ingredients in the worst way possible. He turned his own daughter into a mermaid, which created the first of the big family of evil mermaids. Which was his death.
The entire reason I'm looking through the book of mermaids and the theory and legends is because Sharlie saw the future. Yeah she's that kind of person. The ability to see the future, but the future always changes. Sharlie came to me with the devistating news and I believe it to be true. Sharlie would never lie to me, unless she knew something about Marcus which is impossible because I've told no one my feelings, I trust no one.
Sharlie told me that the evil mermaids were coming to me and ask for the "Brick of Peace." It is known that the Brick of Peace is an object that brings huge amounts of people together to agree with one thing. Or something along that line. I doubt the mermaids have no idea how to use it. But that doesn't matter does it? The mermaids want the Brick of Peace so that the King of the Charlestens (evil mermaids) can convince his clan to trust him, that war against the good mermaids is a good thing.
How will I handle such a dramatic probelm? Mermaids are the most dangerous creatures I've seen or read about, really. Though it is wrong to kill without cause. We must leave the mermaids at peace unless they cross my path.
"May!" Tuck runs inside the library just to talk to me about my "main power." The theory I have no such belief in. It's said that the rulers have every power even known, this is true, but the part I don't believe to be possible is that the theory says every new generation of rulers have their own power, the power that is truly their own. The power they are best at, the power that starts a new family to life. It's true I tell myself, but I know that's a lie.
"C'mon May. You have to agree on this, how many other people have you seen been able to control whatever they please," Tuck begs, and I finally nod my head in agreeance just to make him stop talking about it.
We open the small white door from the library to walk wherever it is were walking. Tuck pulls his hands behind his back as we walk. It was silent, so I decided to break it with the mermaid situation.
Tucks jaw drops wide when I tell him this. The first time I tell Tuck anything it never seems to bother him, but this does, unless he does very well at hiding his true feelings.
Maybe I shouldn't have scared him like that. We're fourteen and running a country. It's our life to be scared, but it's our life to protect and seem un-scared. It's the hardest thing I will ever do, pretend. I decided to change the subject, the mermaids have not come yet so we have time to spare.
"What did Johnathan have to say about his little box?" I asked trying to force the memory of what I didn't out of my brain.
"It's ridiculous. He said that people told him his brother died in the Frog war-"
I gasp. That's the war both my parents died in. That's the war that still lives, that killed many people. It killed Williams father, Christopher. The Frog King still lives waiting for years to pass, perhaps he thinks we are weaker than our parents because we didn't have any to raise us.
I still remember what my maid, Caren told me about my parents. She said my mom had a main power of electricity, she was a starter and my father's was to control water, a sea.
"Sorry, continue." I try to listen but my own thoughts drown out his words. I have to talk to Caren.
"May I have an awesome idea!"
"Wha-what?"
"We should name your main power."
"Oh. Yeah good idea...how about. Let's ask Caren!"
"Caren? Isn't she like forty now?"
"Yeah, but she knows about, um never mind."
"Mayflier?"
"I was hoping Caren could tell me more about our parents."
"More? May. We can protect this country."
"Yes, but maybe we could talk to them somehow. This is the City of Corridor remember?"
"Yes, I remember. Now what was the mermaid thing we have to solve?"
I'm furious he's trying to throw away my proposition, that he's throwing away our parents. Maybe it is possible we could talk to them. Who else do I have to be on my side?
Well there is Marcus and Sharlie but I couldn't handle that. I still can't bring myself to look at Marcus. Caren and Tuck are my only option.
