"I'm sorry for causing you embarrassment," the teacher said after class. Most other students were gone, snickering as they left.

"No," I replied. "Neil was right. I made it worse on myself. Well, I better get going." I stood up, not wanting to be in the room any longer.

"I'll see you tomorrow morning."

I rushed out the door where Blake stopped me. I noticed Neil scowl and head off down the busy hall alone.

"Is there anything I can do to make you feel better?" Blake asked. We walked in sync to a slow, gentle pace. Blake's height gave us enough advantage to maneuver around the random students.

I answered, "I don't know. I'm not used to the limelight. And all this random love stuff is just so confusing. I always thought I'd get to choose who I married."

"You still can," Blake countered. "These people may have their view of the situation, but ultimately, it's your choice. They can't force your heart."

His words hit me hard. I thought back to those moments with Rhys and then Neil. I had felt so connected to them in just seconds, less than. Could they be forcing my heart? Could I be a pawn in this love game?

"You okay?" Blake asked, returning me to the present.

I shook my head. "I don't know. Thanks for the advice, though. I just need some time to think through all this."

"Yeah, it's complicated, even for a simple spectator like me."

I looked at him. His hair covered his eyes, so I couldn't see his expression. Was he jealous? I smiled and replied, "You're not a simple anything. You're my friend. We're in this together no matter where it takes us."

We stopped under the chandelier. Blake looked at me. The surprise left his expression when he saw my smile. He smiled back and relaxed.

"Of course," he said. "We're friends."

"Now and forever." I giggled. "That was cheesy."

Blake laughed with me. "Yeah, a bit."

The entrance hall was almost empty, so I said, "Let's get to our next class."

"Good idea."

Together we walked into Ground Zero with smiles lingering on our faces.
