I went home and called Chaunette right away. She answered after two rings. "Claire! What's up?"
"Hey Chaun, I need a girls talk," I said. I went in my room and put her on speaker so I could look for something to wear.
"What's going on?" She wondered.
I took a deep breath and told her. "Well me and Artemi went out to lunch today, and he-"
"Wait, back the fuck up girl. You guys went to lunch? Are you dating?" She all but yelled.
My cheeks began to heat up even though I was alone. "No!"
"Friends with benefits?"
"Chaunette, no. We're just friends for now. Anyways,-"
"Damn, you two would make a great couple," she interrupted me again.
"Chaun, calm down. We're not dating. I need your help though," I said as I pulled out a pair of ripped skinny jeans. "I'm going to the game tonight and I don't know what to wear."
"I'll be there in 15," she said and hung up. I chuckled to myself and turned back to my closet. What are you even supposed to wear to a hockey game?
About thirty minutes later Chaunette waltzed into my apartment. "I'm here!" She announced as she came into my bedroom.
"Thank God. What am I supposed to wear?" I whined. "I've only been to one other game."
"Don't worry, we'll buy you a jersey for your man when we get there," she winked, causing my cheeks to flame red. "Until then, just put this on." She threw a black v-neck at me.
I stared at the piece of fabric in my hand. "You're sure it's ok?" I asked nervously. I didn't want to look bad.
"Trust me, it's fine. We'll get you a jersey right when we get there so you don't feel too out of place," she assured me. I sent her a grateful grin and got changed. I did my makeup and left my hair down before grabbing my purse.
We arrived at the UC in time to watch the boys warm up. But first, we went to the Blackhawks store. I searched around for something good to buy. I checked the prices on some shirts I thought were cute but immediately put them back. Why was this stuff so expensive?
"Claire!" Chaun shouted across the chaotic store. She waved me over. I meandered through the racks until I met her by all the jerseys. "Try this on."
I took the jersey out of her hand. It had Artemi's last name and number on the back. I shrugged it on over my shirt. "It fits," I decided. I then checked the price tag. "Um, I don't think I want it anymore." I took it off and began to hang it back up.
"Why not?" Chaunette was confused. "You said it fits."
I sighed. "Yeah, but I'm on a college student's budget. I'm obviously not going to make you pay for it so I'll be fine in what I have on."
I started to walk away but Chaun held me back. "No, you're getting this. You deserve to treat yourself. I'll pay for it." I began to protest. "Honestly I don't mind. You know my family's status so it doesn't matter to me." Chaunette and I had been friends for a while and I learned that she came from a wealthy family.
"Still," I gave her a pointed look.
She huffed. "Fine. Since we need to get to our seats soon for warmups, how about we split it, yeah?"
I sighed through my nose, knowing she would make me get the jersey one way or another. "Okay. Let's go."
We bought the jersey and I ripped the tag off and put it on. Now I felt ready for the game.
