Chapter Two:

Present

I woke the next morning in a terrible mood, I rolled out of what was my bed the night before, It wasn't very comfortable but I slept didn't I? I packed my things into my backpack, My Hunting Knife, a small but useful medkit, the leftovers of the rabbit, two bottles of water, A few cans of soup. My spare pair of socks, underwear, shirt and pants. The Flame Powder, an object that I got from a witch in a small town who said that this could make anything burn for 8 hours straight, and sure enough she was right. And the necklace that Shadow gave me.

I was never into Necklaces so I didn't wear it. I decided to keep my Hidden Blade, and my trusty Five Seven handgun on me. I looked at what was left in the camp. My fire which was still burning thanks to the Flame Powder, next to my lean to, was my old brown leather jacket. I picked it up and threw it on, feeling at home again. I then picked up my Staff of Guidance threw the strap around me and wore it on my back. My Five seven to my side, my Hidden Blade in my right sleeve of my jacket and the backpack on my back, I headed toward the Sorcerer's Camp, where I would learn about my parents, about my adopted father, and about my abilities.

I was walking through the forest, hearing the morning mating calls of the birds and frogs. I started to think of when I first learned, or I didn't know it at the time, but the first use of my abilities.

Jack Age: 3

It was a cool morning in the cabin, I rolled out of bed, with the smell of pancakes! The sweet smell filled my nostrils and instead I jumped out of bed and ran into the makeshift kitchen that my new Adopted Father put together. He was a great man, only he was hardly ever home. I was with my sister Annie for most days, she fed me, took care of me, she was the best! I have only been here for a week and I've seen my adopted father only twice. I saw them, I smelled them, I could almost taste them, Pancakes! Annie must know how to make them, I sat at the table and Annie came over with two plates of Pancakes stacked high! As I was shoving the sweetness down my mouth. I asked Annie how old she was, she didn't reply at first but she answered with fourteen. "I wish I was that old." I replied. She seemed nervous about something. "What's wrong?" I asked, At this point I was nearly finished my pancakes. "It's just, Jack. your too little to be...The City it's a dangerous place and Dad, well Dad isn't gonna make it any better." She rest her fingers on my cheek, feeling me as I licked syrup off my plate. "I wish you were born outside the shield, You're the kind of sweet hearted young man that shouldn't be in this place." After I finished my pancakes she picked me up and carried me into the backyard. It was small, full of uncut grass, and surrounded in a wooden fence. "Wow! It's like Nevermore out here!" I yelled. She put me down and laughed "Not Quite bud, not quite" I looked up at her, her smile though only fourteen years old seemed faded. "What's wrong?" I asked looking up at her. "Nothing bud, look I wanted to, show you something." She started walking over to a shed and searched her pocket for a key. "Oh, ok." I just stood there like a idiot, I had no idea what was in that shed.

She inputted the key and opened the shed, inside was hundreds of weapons. Big Broadswords to little Daggers. She grabbed a wooden staff that had a metal handle in the center, and a knife on one end that was made of a green crystal. She walked over to me and handed it to me. It was about five feet long, it was way bigger then me or at least three year old me, and it was really light, "This Jack is the Staff of Guidance, once you learn how to use it, it will point you in the way you need to go." I had the Staff in my hands.

She got on one knee and wrapped a red feather on a string around it, right below the green crystal. "That feather is from my necklace." she pointed to where her necklace was. Yesterday it had three feathers, one blue, one green and one red feather. But now it was just the blue and green ones. "Why did you give me this?" I asked. "Because Jack, your a Blade now, It's time you learned to stop being innocent and learn how to fight." This shocked me, I didn't want to learn how to fight, the people are so nice here, the orphanage that raised me were so kind, and Annie is the best sister ever. "I don't want to learn how to fight."

"Well suck it up Jack, you need to learn how to defend yourself." She took the staff from my hand and placed a dagger in my hand, and pointed to the fence. "Throw the knife." I was taken back, how will this teach me how to fight? Why was she being so mean?

"No!" I yelled.

"Throw the knife Jack." She said more calmly.

"No!" I yelled.

"THROW THE KNIFE!" She demanded.

And it all happened so fast, it started when the words left her mouth, I could feel my heart racing. And then I could feel her heart racing, as if it were my own. The rushing water in the sewage pipes underneath us, And the horses and helicopters of the City, the busy streets of the City, the fighting of Nevermore creatures I could hear it all at once. Then I could see a big city on a island, with a big green lady holding a torch and a book? People around the world called it the Statue Of Liberty. here's where things get weird, I could have sworn I saw another world altogether, there was a man who was fighting a beast using black beams of energy, and raising the undead on this beast. And when the vision and the noises cleared, the Knife that Annie wanted me to throw was still in my hand, only the other end was in her chest. Tears formed in my eyes. She fell to the ground, she was already gone.

Blood was gushing, it was all over my hands, my arms, my face.

"Annie?" My lips couldn't form any words after that.

And though I didn't know it then, that was when my life changed forever...
