CHAPTER TWO
I stared at the letter in disbelief.
HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY
Headmistress: Minerva McGonagall(order of Merlin, second class, International Confed. of Wizards)
Dear Miss Jones,
We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all books and equipment.
Term begins on 1 September. We await your owl by no later than 31 July.
Yours sincerely,
Neville Longbottom
Deputy Headmaster
No, I thought. This CAN'T be real. Hogwarts only exists in the books and movies. I shook my head.
"What does it say, darling?" Mam asked.
"Er..." I stuttered.
"Well, read it," she said, quite impatient now.
I did. When I finished, she looked at me, rather shocked.
"Well," she said finally. "So Neville's the Deputy Headmaster. I wasn't expecting that." She pursed her lips.
"Well... why d'you think I got a Hogwarts letter? It can't be real, can it?" I said.
"Well, love, I hate to disappoint you, since I know how much you love those books, but, no, it can't," Mam replied. "Sorry, poppet."
"Mam, please don't call me that. You KNOW I hate it." I frowned at her.
"Sorry, dear," she said. "Shall we forget about the letter now?"
I nodded. No matter how much I wished it could be real, it was impossible.
******Two Weeks Later*******
"We're going to London!" Mam said, waltzing into my room.
"What?!" I cried, sitting straight up in my bed. "Why?"
"Araneus wants to go back. I reckoned we could go with him."
"D'you mean MOVE there?" I exclaimed.
"Yes! Lovely, isn't it?"
"Erm... I suppose." I hadn't seen Mam this happy in a while, and I didn't have that many friends here, so I didn't mind moving.
"Pack your things! We're going next week."
"Er... Mam, how long have you known about this for?"
She giggled like a little girl. "Oh, it was a spur-of-the-moment decision," she said.
"Alright then," I said. I got out of bed.
Well, that was unexpected," I thought. Not much had happened in the last few weeks; Mam had started to go out with Araneus, who was quite nice when you got to know him, despite his menacing appearance.
I had kept my faux Hogwarts letter. I didn't know why, but part of me didn't want to throw it out. Call me silly, but I just couldn't bring myself to.
I packed up. It didn't take long; I didn't have much. We might have been poor like the Weasleys, but at least there was only two of us!
A while later, we were eating
lunch- me, Mam, and Araneus. It was raining outside. Then Araneus turned to me.
"Can I speak with you for a moment, Iris?" He asked.
"Oh- of course," I replied. He led me out of the kitchen.
"I know about the Hogwarts letter," he said. "Your mum told me."
"Oh. And?" I peered at him curiously. He pulled me aside to talk about a prank probably done by one of my nastier classmates?
"It's not fake. Your mum was rather dismissive about it, but I swear to you, it's real," he said. He looked absolutely serious. What in the world was he on about?
"Er... Very funny, but I'm not a child. You can't fool me with that type of thing anymore." I folded my arms.
"Iris, you have to believe me," he pleaded.
"Why?" I asked. "I've only known you for a few weeks. Why should I trust you, anyway?"
"Because I'm telling the truth!" He cried.
"Don't shout at me or I'll tell Mam," I said. I started to walk away. He was crazy. Wonderful. And Mam'd never listen to me if I tried to tell her anyway.
But just as I passed him, I heard him mutter, "she just needs proof. I'll take her to Diagon Alley then."
Like hell you will, I thought. But he could try. I was going to enjoy watching this man try to convince me of this absurd thing.
*******One Week After That *******
I almost laughed. "No, it's not. Good try, but I'm not stupid," I said.
"But it is! You are such a frustrating little girl, you know that?" Araneus told me.
"Look, Araneus, you're a nice bloke and all, and I can tell Mam really likes you, but you're mental. It's. Not. The. Leaky. Cauldron! Okay?"
"Oh, just come with me," he said.
He led the way into the pub. It was full of strange people in robes and funny pointed hats.
"Isn't it rather early for Halloween costumes?" I said.
Araneus ignored me. Poor man, I really seemed to be bothering him. But honestly, did he really expect me to believe all this?
Then a man walked forward.
He was old and toothless, and was drying a mug with an old tea towel.
He smiled at me. "You must be Iris. Araneus's told us all about you," he said. "The name's Tom, by the way."
I scowled. "Oh really?" I said. "And I expect there's a little old lady named Doris Crockford, and a man named Daedalus Diggle, too? I respect you for trying, but there's really no way I'm going to believe all this," I smiled st them anyway.
Then I turned to Araneus. "Can we get on with this? Mam will want us to be back soon."
"Right." He sighed. "Let's go."
He walked outside the pub and out into a small, walled courtyard.
He walked up to one of the walls, brought out a stick that looked a bit like a wand, I suppose, and tapped it three times.
The middle brick he had touched wriggled and a little whole appeared. It got bigger and bigger until it formed a small archway, opening onto a twisty cobbled street.
Okay, I'll admit it. That would've been difficult to fake.

So there'll be a lot of jumping forward in time soon. More major characters will be introduced soon as well! Hope you all like it so far!!!!
