Ch. 2- Not Enough Pant-Suits in the World

It's been three days since the job-fair and career mixer. And three days of interviews.

I'd been running around making it to the clinics and private practices I've gotten interviews at all day. So far, only one hospital has reached out. It was more of a commute, but the hours of observation were right when I had the most availability.

There aren't enough pant-suits in this lifetime to make an appearance at every sit down I've had today alone. I sat in a coffee shop while I waited for the last two interviews I had for the day.

I hate the wait after an interview. Just tell me if I've got the damn thing!

But, no, every employer had this whole story about how many applicants they had and needed time to discuss everything. I get it, I do. I've just been on my toes about the whole thing.

Next semester is potentially the start of my clinicals. If all goes well with my classes, I'll have enough credits to start them. Senior year is really just getting into your practice. You finish up your classes and begin rounds in a medical vicinity.

I just need one foot in the door, and I'll be able to make things happen. This is all I know, it's all I want to do and I've worked damn hard to get to where I'm at already.

My parents weren't sending me off for $50,000+ in tuition for me to slack and waste time.  They worked hard to put me and my brothers through our respective years in college. Me being the youngest and last one, I felt like I had something to prove. I owed them the world.

My parents are doing pretty well in life. We grew up living in a middle-waged neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. They always sent me to schools outside where we stayed. My mom always said it was for a better education, but I overheard them telling the truth one day. They thought I was too weak for the neighborhood schools, that were admittedly rough.

They didn't think I'd be able to handle myself with staying away from the wrong crowds and bullying that might occur. The other schools I went to weren't fairyland either. I hated middle school and high school. Girls are dumb and petty, and I was too quiet for the guys.

But once I came to college, and started to feel more confident and sure of myself, I realized growing up like that has helped me in a way.

Sure, I went out and drank like the average college student. But I was smart and responsible about it.

Mostly.

I couldn't help but let go and have fun ever so often. Being in the medical field is no joke. It's a lot of long hours and stress. But it's worth doing if it's what you love.

I must've went off into la la land for a while. Because before I knew it, my coffee ran cold and the alarm I set to notify me of my next interview went off.

I threw away my stuff and grabbed my bag before heading out. It was a short walk to the next office I was set for an interview at. It was still pretty early but I'd show up anyway.

Before I could make it to the door, my phone rang. I took it out to see who was calling. I didn't recognize the number.

"Hello?"

"Good afternoon Ms. Raye, this is Sheila Brenners from Mercy First Hospital. I am calling on behalf of Dr. Davis. You've met with him a few days ago about a position here, am I correct?"

"Yes! We spoke about maybe finding me someone to observe or start my clinicals if possible." I said a little confused. I for sure did not try to apply for anything.

"Oh? Well, I was asked to inform you of an offer as assistant PT to a Dr. Somers this fall." She stated to my utter shock.

"Really? Wow, thank you! I would like to hear more about this opportunity, but, I accept. What're my next steps?"

I sat down at the nearest table and took out my notepad and pen. Ms. Sheila gave me details on when I could meet with Dr. Somers and begin paperwork.

I couldn't believe this! Had Dr. Davis really pulled something big like this? For me? We had only met with a brief conversation and went on our way. This was crazy, but I was thankful nonetheless.

I texted Janiece that'd I'd be in earlier and to order us some food. I cancelled the last interview for the day and flew past the one I was headed to. I tried to stay professional and handle myself correctly, but I was beyond amped up. Good thing they hadn't offered me anything on the spot because I would've had to modestly decline.

-------

"What's gotten you so smilely? You power walked up in here like you aren't wearing those skinny ass red bottoms." Janiece confronted once we sat down after the food came in.

"Remember that doctor from the other day?"

"Who wouldn't? That's a nice looking man right there, if I wasn't trying to lay down with my professor, I'd be changing my major right now." She said theatrically.

"Messy. But anyway, I didn't even hear from him or the hospital about an interview or anything until today. And-"

"He called and tried to schedule a massage therapy session for tomorrow night?" Janiece wriggled her brows and started to dance a little in her seat.

"Bitch, what? Calm down. Some lady called while I was on my way to some next shit, saying they were offering me a position next year. Get this, on behalf of Dr. Davis."

"No fucking way! Bitchhhhh!! That's what I'm talking about. You definitely deserve that shit." She said and pulled me in for a hug.

"Thanks, boo. I go in to meet with who I'll be working under tomorrow."

"I knew he wanted you. He was looking lost in those eyes of your babygirl. He probably wanted you working under him too." She popped her tongue and dipped into my plate.

"Shut up, I won't even be working in his department. I really do wonder why he did something so nice for me. There must've been so many people walking up to that table."

"It doesn't matter. You got your whole life together and be on your grind constantly. You had it in the bag as soon as you walked in the gym." She said and I smiled tearing up a little.

"Alright, stop all that mushy gushy. I'm starting to cry."

"You know I love you, little hoe."

We finish up our dinner and watched Grey's Anatomy until we fell asleep on the couch.
