ALEX'S POV
Today wan't as bad as I thought it would be. Jack seems pretty nice and, after I agreed to his offer to help me with Spanish, the day seemed to go by pretty fast. It was a whirl of paper and color coded binders, and then there was Jack, waiting by my locker and leaving me wondering how he knew where it was, before realizing that he had looked over my schedule and helped me with all of my classes.
The kind offering of Jack's help was something I was unused to, and something I was extremely grateful for. At my old school, new kids were like fresh meat in a pile of rotting skeletons. People could be horribly cruel, and I had been dreading this day for weeks because I felt certain that this school would be no better than my old one in New York. And yet, except for on the bus, most people had seemed generally welcoming, and I hadn't seen any of the fights that I was used to seeing regularly break out in the hallways.
I quickly maneuvered my way through the crowds of teenage cliques and flashed a shy smile at Jack, who seemed impressed by my ability to not get run over by the ignorant high-schoolers.
"I just need to grab my books, and then we can go...?" I said to the boy standing next to me, embarassed at having kept him waiting and not quite sure where we were going. I checked the locker combination written on my schedule before spinning the dial randomly, having no idea how to open it.
"Yeah, sure, d'you want to go to my house?" Jack asked distractedly, waving at a tall guy in he crowd. "Or we can go to your's, if you want?" He added.
I shifted on my feet awkwardly. "Um... Can we go to yours? My parents aren't starting work until next week so..."
Jack laughed. "Hey, I get it. Annoying parents, yeah?" I grinned.
"Ugh, tell me about it!" A new voice chimed in. I turned around to see the guy that Jack was waving to before. He was brown haired, and very muscular. He stuck out his hand. "Hi, I'm Zack," he said with a smile. I shook his hand.
"Alex," I muttered. Zack nodded in acknowledgment. All of a sudden I saw Jack's face brighten.
"Hey, Zack, wanna come over? I was just gonna help Alex with the Spanish cause he's never it before, you could help?"
Zack shook his head. "Nah, man, I gotta run, actually. Becky's waiting for me at the coffee shop, then we're gonna hang out. Sorry, another time?" He asked apologetically.
"Yeah sure, and oh, don't do anything I wouldn't do!" Jack called as Zack's face reddened and he pushed his way down the hallway. "Becky's his girlfriend," Jack explained.
"Oh..." I said, still trying to get my locker open. Jack smirked and swatted my hand away. He banged on the corner of the locker with his fist and it swung open.
"The lockers at this school are crap, don't leave anything worth money in 'em." He told me as I hurriedly grabbed my books. I nodded in agreement.

JACK'S POV
"So, um, where's your house?" Alex asked, breaking the awkward silence as we walked down the street.
"Down a block and around the corner," said Jack. "Here, pretty much everyone lives right next to each other." He laughed. "What about you, where did you move into?"
"Down two blocks and then a right, then around the corner." he responded, before we both fell into silence once again. But this time, it was more of a comfortable silence, and as we rounded the corner to my house I was glad that I decided to help him.
I unlocked the door and led him inside, gesturing that he should just throw his backack onto the couch. I demonstrated by doing the same before quickly going to the kitchen and grabbing a bag of chips.
Gesturing Alex to follow me up the stairs, I made my way into my room where I ripped open the chips and plopped onto my bed. I was much more comfortable in my own surroundings, and I could tell that even Alex was relaxing a bit.
I offered him the chips and for a moment I thought I saw his face fall a little bit, which was strange, before he grabbed some, his face lighting up again. "Hey, thanks, my parents legit have only like, healthy stuff in the house. It's disgusting." He made a face. I laughed and started walking around my room randomly.
"So, what do you want to do?" I said, jumping onto my bed again and bouncing on my knees.
Alex smiled and said, "Well the reason I came over was to work on Spanish..."
"Yeah? Not because I'm just the most awesomest, coolest person in the world?" I teased, reminding myself of an annoying kindergartener.
He laughed, embarassed. "That too," he said grabbing a chip. "But mainly the Spanish." He added, crunching.
"I like you," I declared, reaching into the bag and throwing another chip at him. "You're funny, you should sit with us at lunch tomorrow!"
ALEX'S POV
"You should sit with us at lunch tomorrow!" Jack said.
I grinned happily. Those eight words had just made my day tomorrow so much easier. I had spent ealier today going over my schedule in the library while all the other students had eaten in the disturbingly small cafeteria. I definitely did not want to do that the entire year.
We sat in silence for a few minutes, learning about each other through our silence. I learned that Jack could not sit stil. He shuffled around on his bed before falling with a huff over the side, looking at me upside down out of the corner of his eyes. I cracked a grin and chuckled at this strange boy.
"Seriously, though," said Jack, breaking the silence. "Spanish class is a joke. All you have to do is turn in your homework and you're basically guaranteed an A or higher." he snorts, grabbing another handful of chips.
I raised my eyebrow at him as he crunched loudly on the snack. For someone so skinny, he sure ate a lot. I remember back when Tom died and I was hardly eating anything, and then later when I wouldn't stop eating, just to have something to do other than think about my brother's suicide.
Jack's voice brought my thoughts back to present and I focused on what he was saying, not wanting him to think I wasn't listening. "...So d'you wanna get started on our homework? I can show you how to do the spanish sheet."
"Yeah, sure!" I said, hoping I hadn't sounded like a jerk earlier. Jack tossed his backpack from the bed to the floor, causing a loud thump.
I mimicked him, pulling a folder out of my backpack that contained the small amount of homework we had recieved so far. Sliding the Spanish sheet out, I spread out onto the floor and Jack flopped down next to me, grabbing a pencil and quickly explaining to me what everything meant.
I was conscious of his warm forearm pressing against mine, and thought it was strange that Jack would be so bold on just the first day of meeting me. It wasn't awkward, however, more like companionable as we worked our way though the homework.
After finishing a good deal, I packed up my backpack and left, grinning widely. I had made a friend, on my first day of school. I was going to sit with him at lunch tomorrow. And, best of all, I hadn't thought of Tom in more than two hours.
