[MABEL's POV]

From the kitchen window, lumpy drops of rain plopped on the warm, muggy black top road and flew against the window pane. I watched as  the droplets raced down the side to see who would get to the bottom the fastest.  As I ate my frozen waffles with sprinkles with one hand,  I fiddled through my backpack to reach my phone with the other.

"Mabel! Are you ready?!" My mom called from the bathroom where she was applying her  last bits of makeup. She had caught me in mid bite with mouthful  of blueberry waffle. Struggling, I mumbled in a response that came out somewhat like, "mmmmhh ya...sssssssssss..." I chucked down the rest of my breakfast, slipped on my black fla-neakers, and made my way downstairs to the garage. I waited for about five minutes until mom finally got down and started the engine of the metallic red Toyota. Soon, we were out on the highway. I looked at my phone one last time until I settled in to journey through the land of Harry Potter.

Nothing. Haha, probably at school.

[MARIE's POV]

The lunch table seemed uncharacteristically quiet. We sat side by side around the blue and red oval/circle tables, eating our lunch in silence. My eyes searched up to Addison, trying to see if she knew what all the drama was about this time that caused the non-communication. There was only a plain expression of disgust as she wiped the counter clean with a rough napkin from the dispenser and some of her own hand sanitizer. It didn't do much good anyway. As she lifted the paper up, a sticky residue was clearly presented in its horrendous glory. Instead of peeling away from the grease as the expected reaction, she mounted her place but slumped back into the chair, staring off in her own world.

Strange thing. Addison was never the girl to be the center of the scene yet it seemed as if she were the only thing interesting that day. The other girls must have had of the similar thinking. We daintily chewed our lunch, all the while watching Addison's every movement, especially her eyes. They were like stars drifting into the no where's of space; dreaming into a romantic Wonderland of enchantment and fantasy.

Addison shook her head violently, ripping away from her curious day dream. "What?" She cocked her head to the side like a confused puppy to me. The others at the table reacted quickly by mumbling to one another of random things, attempting to strike as innocent and blame me for the eavesdropping.
"Uh, nothing." I said briskly, hoping it wasn't too noticeably.
"No serious, what?" A frown was planted on her face; one that was more of a disappointment rather than anger. For that I was somewhat grateful and relieved, but conflicted for my ignorance of being a good friend. It was time to revive the REAL Marie.
"Okay, fine. I just didn't know how to put it,but... You seem... more distant than usual?" I tried for a smile to bring up any missed confusion.
"No." Addison gazed down to her lap, where you could view the abandoned ABC gum stuck helplessly underneath the ancient aged lunch tables. "It's fine, it's fine." Finally, she lifted her face where she gave me her famous crooked smile that always came out as a sarcastic tone. I gave her a nudge on the shoulder. The bell rang.

[MABEL's POV]

White walls. White flooring. White people. It enveloped me like a cradled baby.

NAH! Dr Tract's children's eye care center includes bonkaliscious colors and mixed matched themes from Bubble Guppies to Elmo. Plus he's Jamaican.

Me: HAAHAHAHA YOURE AT SCHOOL
Delivered

My mom abandoned me to shop around the city boutiques. In an orange plastic mini chair, I watched Barney with the other kids. They seemed to accept me into their little gang "of the waiting room." I was a giant amongst the munchkins who feared my every move! Okay, maybe not, but it was a self esteem booster. I know, it's sad.

One little boy asked me how old I was. I said I was fourteen. He gave me a spitting raspberry and left to his mother, probably to tell her how cool I was.
"Mabel Klinger."
I looked away from the bright moving screen to the sound of the voice. A woman in khaki slacks and a flower-patterned blouse stood in the open doorway to the office. She held a wooden clipboard and a face that said, "Kill me now." She courteously led the way to my room where I waited by myself with more fun filled toys to occupy my hands.

My mom held me up by the arm as I made my way to the car. Like a vampire (not Twilight!), the sun's light burned to the touch on my eyes. They've been dilated so instead of just a really really really dark midnight poop color, they were just midnight black. Like my soul!
The car slowly sped out of the parking lot and a violent string of texts began pouring out from my phone. QUACK! QUACK! My vision still weak and delicate, the little inch screen blared back at me with unbearable power. I swiftly switched the lock screen with my thumb.
"Mabel, just take a nap. That'll help lessen the aggravation."
"Fine." I pushed the passenger's seat back and closed my eyes, feeling the sting finally find relief.

***

"Blarrrghhhhh!"  I swung my head in an abrupt  surprise that my mom had almost jumped out of the driver's seat. "Where am I?!" Clearing my confusion with a few blinks and a good sounded yawn, I gave my mom an apologetic face. She put on a silent face, but I knew she just wanted to laugh at the type of child she raised.
"Fifteen more minutes until we're home and we can get dinner or something."
"Okay, sounds good."

-56 MESSAGES-

Testing my eyes again to see if I could handle the phone's intensity, I blinked vigorously to the floor mat of the front seat. All seemed normal, but for extra precautions I immediately lowered my brightness of my screen to its minimum. Checking my messages, my 56 messages was not what I thought to be. It turned out it was 156 messages. I pressed the app and went into the chat. There was way too much to read, so instead, I looked at only the most recents. 20 minutes ago.

Elli: MABEL! YOU MISSED OUT SOOOOO MUCH IN SCHOOL!
Marie: this time were telling the truth
Elli: Addison barfed everywhere
Marie: it was yucky

{IT TOOK ALL MY WILL POWER TO TYPE THAT😰}

I stopped there. Chills went up my spine at the mention of that putrid word. I almost dropped my phone from my buttery shaken hands. Without hesitation, being dramatic as I am, I threw the device away and veered my eyes onto the road. I would read the rest later.
