"Wait."

I could already feel the brisk winter air on my face as I opened the front door, trying to sneak out of the house that early morning before anyone could stop me. In the early morning, the fallen snow lay smoothly across the road, the rental car promising a quick and quiet escape. And yet-

I gulped. "Claude, don't make this more difficult than it has to be."

"No," he insisted, the ferocity in his voice surprising me. "I don't understand. What happened last night? You let me in. You let me see everything. And I'm not scared of that, Bea. I saw who you are and I still want everything with you."

"But I can't give you what you want," I replied, and now I had to face him. I turned around to find him coming down the stairs, quickly approaching and part of me wanted to run away. Everything in me wanted to stay forever. That everything scared me.
