I sighed as I watched Isaac walk away from me. I knew that it was tough for him, accepting the fact that he no longer had parents, but it was still disappointing.
"'Sup Cece?"
I turned around to see Nala grinning at me. She was wearing a rather odd outfit, a three-quarter sleeve shirt, ripped up jeans, and a choker. I shot her a halfhearted smile and dejectedly headed towards my locker.
"Where ya goin', tiger?" Nala called, chasing after me. "To get my stuff." I answered.
"Hey, are you alright?" Nala asked once she caught up with me. She poked me gently. I leaned away from her, reaching my hand into my locker and pulling out a couple of books.
"Just tired." I answered, avoiding her eyes. Nala poked me again, this time a little harder. "I don't think you're 'just tired'." She said, staring me down. "I think something's wrong with you and Isaac."
"Where the hell did you get that idea?" I snapped coldly.
Nala scowled at me. "You were just talking to him, he shook you off and walked away, now you're all pissy. Does it really take a rocket scientist to figure this out?"
I bit my lip. As much as I loved Nala, this wasn't something she needed to get involved in.
I took a deep breath. "I'm sorry. I really am." I said quietly, shoving some books into my backpack. Nala shrugged. "S'alright. I know that something's wrong, but if you don't want to tell me, I ain't gonna push ya." She held up her hands. "Truce."
I grinned. "Love ya," I told her, slinging my bag over my shoulder. "Everybody does." Nala raised her eyebrows, as if this was obvious. I laughed.
We walked to class together, so I had a chance to ask her about the clothes she was wearing. "What's up with the choker?" I asked, tilting my head.
Nala uncomfortably touched her neck. She seemed reluctant to explain herself, but she did anyway.
"I just...uh...thought I would try something new." She said slowly.
I raised my eyebrows, unconvinced.
"Hey guys!"
Nala and I both jumped as someone called us from behind. I turned around and found a rather skinny boy with short, light brown hair, hazel eyes, and tan skin standing behind us. His hand was wrapped around another girl, one whom I didn't know. She was dressed in a tight black shirt and skinny jeans, a choker just like Nala's around her neck. A shock of pink stood out in her black hair. She was extremely pale.
Nala let out a weird squeaking noise. "Hey Jake." She said, not even acknowledging the girl next to him.
Jake. Isaac's best friend. I wondered if they had even spoken lately.
"'Sup Nala." Jake did that weird heads-up thing that boys do. Kind of like he was having a neck spasm. "Yo Cece." He added, turning to me.
"Uh, hey Jake." I said, eyeing Nala suspiciously. "Um...who's your friend?"
Jake glanced at the girl he was holding rather tightly. "This is my girlfriend, Victoria." He introduced us. Victoria greeted us with a thin smile and a hand raise.
I tilted my head. "That's nice. I didn't know you were dating."
Jake shrugged. "Not a lot of people do. Have you seen Isaac? He hasn't been replying to my texts at all and I heard he was in school today."
"Uh...yeah." I stammered. "He...er...to be honest I'm not sure where he went. Check his locker, maybe his first class. All I got for ya."
Jake shrugged again. I found his shrugging rather annoying. "Okay thanks. I'll go look for him."
He turned and walked away, his little goth purse in tow. I watched them go before turning to Nala, a very wide grin on my face.
"You like him."
"Do not!"
"Yes you do! That's why you wore the choker!"
"No!"
"YES!"
"Stop it Cece!"
"I can see it in your eyes."
"NO!""You love him."
"CECILIA KEE."I started singing a stupid song about love, running down the hallway as Nala chased me, screaming bloody murder.
Whatever. This was payback for all those years of teasing that she had done to me.
I would be fine as long as she didn't catch me.
Unfortunately, at that moment, a burst of pain shot through my hip. I yelped and collapsed, right as Nala pounced and completely crushed me.
