RILEY

I was going crazy. Not talking to Jason was a lot harder than I thought. Jason was basically my only best friend and now, I had to pretend that he never existed. How the fuck do you do that? They should write a book about that. How to Forget About Your BFF 101.

Or maybe I should find a new best friend. Obviously, the same sex. Learned my lesson there: no guy best friends ever again because they'll end up falling for you. Okay, so today was the day I was going to find myself a girl best friend.

"Hey cap," I heard Tina calling me from the end of the hall. Once she got my attention she came jogging towards me. Hold on, Tina could be my new best friend! "Are you coming later?" she asked.

"To...?"

Her jaw dropped at the fact that I didn't know what she was talking about. "Pizza Shack, Kelsey's birthday surprise," she said in a duh tone.

I mentally face palmed myself. "Right," I said. "Yeah, I'll be there."

She grinned and clapped her hands together, "Awesome." She turned on her heels to leave when I grabbed her arm to stop her.

"Wait," I called. "I need to ask you something."

"What?" She turned back around.

"Do you uh...want to be best friends or something?" I shrugged.

She blinked and suddenly burst out laughing. "You can't just ask people if you want to be best friends, Cap." She managed to say while laughing.

Was it pretty obvious that I didn't know how to get a best friend? I practically just embarrassed myself. This was crazy, how was I going to replace Jason ASAP?

"I'm sorry," I shook my head in embarrassment. "I don't know how to do this kind of shit."

"What, socialize?"

"No, look for best friends." I answered, "Everyone already has a best friend but me. How the hell do I find one?"

She placed a hand on my shoulder as a movement of sympathy. "Poor child..." she started and with that I stepped on her foot and she winced in pain. After a few curse words she continued, "You don't go looking for best friends, they just come out of nowhere in the most perfect moment." She explained.

"Right now would be the perfect moment," I muttered.

"Why? You and Jason fighting?" she asked.

I shrugged, "Something like that."

"What happened? You two were like the Dynamic Duo, how could you two be fighting?" she raised an eyebrow at me. "And how could it be so bad you decide to replace him?"

I bit my lip ad shrugged again, "I can't say."

"Well whatever it is, you two will make up, I know it." She said, "So don't go replacing him just yet."

"But..."

"Cap, I've seen the way you guys are together. You guys are weird, embarrassing, loud –"

"Get to the point," I deadpanned.

"You're yourselves around each other," she pointed out. "And you accept each other. I don't know about you, but that's what being a best friend means. Accepting."

I looked at her and read her expression. She was dead serious. Jason was my best friend and nothing could change that. But I still had to avoid the weirdo. The last thing I needed was an awkward friendship between me and him.

"Okay," I nodded. "Thanks."

"Glad I could help," she grinned. "See you in practice, Cap."

I would love to say that today went by so fast I didn't have to blink, but damn was I stressing the whole time. Why was it that when you're avoiding someone they happen to be everywhere you go? When I needed to get to my locker Jason was always close by, when I would start walking to class Jason would always pass by, and even during lunch Jason sat at the table across from mine.
