A dark and foggy night, perfect for the occasion. Late October, snow has fallen all week but this night seems quite warm in comparison. Screams of Trick or Treat come from all around, costumes of every possible thing running in all directions. Walking along the sidewalk between children and parents struggling to keep up with their pushing children, as if the candy would run out. Be the first to fill your bag so you can fill another. Candy for days maybe even weeks depending on the parent. I look at my pitiful sack; a few candy bars, a sucker, a candy apple and some strange taffy that would end up in the trash. I hadn't stopped at a house for over a block now. Truth is, I'm not even here. I should be at Steph's but mom said no, take your sister out trick or treating. A night of scary movies, popcorn and my best friends and boyfriend sounded better than this.
"Can't you at least pretend to have fun Carmen?" Sophia asked. "I know you wanted to go to Steph's and I told mom to let you go that I could walk with my friends."
I smiled at her "I know Soph, its not your fault. I'm sorry I zoned out lets get some more candy. I bet the church on the corner is having its Trunk or Treat thing like last year." She smiled at me and grabbed my hand. Sophia was only ten, but she was mature for her age. Although, that didn't stop her from dressing up like a princess and skipping at the thought of candy.
My phone buzzed in my pocket "It's Tony, go get candy from the last few houses I'll get off the phone when we get to the church." I told Sophia. She nodded and ran up the nearby jack-o-lantern lit driveway.
"Hey! How are the movies babe?" I asked into the phone.
"Scary, I could use someone to cover my eyes over the real bad parts. Is your mom going to let you come at all?" Tony whispered into the phone. Obviously trying to be quiet so he doesn't inturrupt the movie.
"I doubt it. Sophia and I are going to hit the churches Trunk or Treat and if she fills her bag maybe I can take her home." Muffled sounds of laughter in the background irritated me and made me angry at my mother. "Sounds like you guys are having fun." The sounds continued along with strange static as if he had put the phone in his pocket. "Tony?" The noises had softened but still no answer. "Tony!" the phone went dead.
I looked down at the screen and called back. Put the phone to my ear and listened. Ring....Ring...Ring...Its Tony, leave a message I might call you back. I looked at the phone again and hit the call button again. Ring...Ring...Ring...It's... I hung up and stared down at the screen and my head started racing through all of the possibilities. I quickly pulled open my contacts and found Steph's number and hit call. Ring...Ring...Ring...
Arms wrapped around me and I was lifted from the ground my phone fell from my hand. I screamed and started to kick my feet around. Then I heard laughter, laughter all too familiar. Tony and Steph were laughing uncontrollably as Tony set me back on my feet.
"Carmen, I wish I could have seen your face" Stephanie huffed around her giggling. "We figured since you couldn't make it to the movie marathon we'd just come hang out with you!"
"I couldn't sit there with everyone without you," Tony said after spinning me around and planting a kiss on my mouth. "Plus Steph invited Jack, Riley and some of their friends."
I laughed "Those two can't handle sleeping without a night light, what were you thinking Steph?"
"Hey now" she laughed and started to blush "I just didn't want to be the only one annoyed with you two sucking face."
