"Eric, are you all right? You took so much time that I had started worrying.", said Mrs. Truscott kissing her husband. "Yes. I am so sorry to keep you all worrying dear.", said Mr. Truscott trying smile.

"A very happy birthday to you, Dirk. I am so sorry I could not bring any presents for you.", said Mr. Truscott looking dejected. "Oh dad I don't need one. You are here and that's the biggest present I have got seriously.", said Dirk hugging his father. "You already sound like a man.", said Mr. Truscott smiling.

Dirk had blonde brown hair and green eyes just like his mother. Sarah on the contrary looked like her father. She had thick brunette hair with dark hazel eyes. Phyllis had ginger hair with green eyes like her brother and had dimples.

"I think you children should go to bed now. Its very late. Look at Phyllis. She will fall off the couch now. I think I will carry her up.", said Mrs. Truscott after Dirk and Sarah had finished talking to their father.

After transporting Phyllis to her room, Mrs. Truscott bade her elder two children good night and after inspecting if they had fallen asleep, went away downstairs.

Sarah who always suffers from shallow sleep could not go to sleep that night. After laying awake for some time she decided to go downstairs for some water. As she went down the stairs she saw the light of the living room on and could hear the voices of their parents coming from behind the partially closed door. She tiptoed to the refrigerator, drank water, and then was about go back to her room when she suddenly heard her mother sob and then again lower her voice.

"Oh how did this happen? Why didn't you tell this to me before, Eric?", said Mrs. Truscott sniffing.

"Oh Anna how could I tell this thing to you over the line? There are many things to tell you.", said Mr. Truscott. "Tell me. Please tell me everything.", said Mrs. Truscott sniffing again.

"I had gone to Lancashire when I was called to the government headquarters for something. I had to leave everything behind and went up there. When I reached there, I found everyone looking somber and then my senior, Mr. Rivers, told me that I had been fired. I am pretty sure I have been fired on false charges. Whatever, I tried my best to prove my innocence and also to find out the real reason for losing my job. At last I found out that it was the doing of the chairperson. It seems that he was jealous of me because of my rising position and respect in the office in spite of my coming from a lower background."

"He had a false story against me and somehow made false proofs and evidences with the help of some officers who were with him. I tried my way best to proof myself right and had even taken this thing to the court. It seemed that the court and the government had found Radleigh's plea much more convincing though there were some of my loyal friends by my side who believed me. I was demanded a huge sum by Radleigh which I had to pay because they were blackmailing me. Moreover Radleigh's very dominating. I also had to pay fine in order to escape from getting in jail. Which....... Which..... Has not only left me jobless... but.... But.... Bankrupt too..... And I just don't know what I will do." , finished Mr. Truscott and broke down into a sob.

"Oh Eric! What will happen to us? What will happen to our children? To their future? Why, oh why are people full of conceit that they can't even bear to see a person from low background do good and be rich? Why don't we get justice? Oh why?", said Mrs. Truscott breaking down.

"Anna, tell me one thing. Will you, will you stop loving me for this? Will you leave me because I could not take proper care of all of you? Because I wasn't a good husband?", asked Mr. Truscott.

"Oh dear why are you telling such things? Why do you think I will leave you? Eric, don't blame yourself for all this. It's not your mistake. My love for you will never falter. You have already proved yourself to be a very good husband and father. We can't do anything. Only we have to hope for the best. Don't worry, I will always be by your side.", said Mrs. Truscott sighing.

"Thank you. Thank you so much.", whispered Mr. Truscott. "We have to ensure that none of our kids get to know the actual reason. I don't want upset them and spoil their hols.", said Mr. Truscott. "Hmm.", replied Mrs. Truscott. Silence followed.

Sarah had been standing all the while listening to the conversation transfixed to the spot. She was shocked and dumfounded. She was indeed afraid as she had never heard her father cry before. She understood the gravity of the situation. She could take no more. The bottle which she was holding slipped from her hand making a rather loud sound in the motionless night and a gasp escaped her mouth.

"Who's out there? Or to be more precise which one of you is out there?", said Mrs. Truscott sounding a little annoyed.

Sarah entered the room, her head bent down, trembling. "Why are you out here this late?", asked Mrs. Truscott. Sarah pointed towards the bottle and told why she was there, that she was not being able to sleep. She was still trembling. There was a moment of silence. After that Mrs. Truscott asked- "Did you hear anything? Sarah, tell the truth."

Sarah nodded feeling afraid. "Everything?", asked Mr. Truscott. "I... I think so.", said Sarah shaking.

"Don't you know eavesdropping is a bad habit?", said Mrs. Truscott. "Mum I was not eavesdropping, I didn't want to. I am sorry. I did not mean it. I won't do it from now on. Please don't scold me Mum.", said Sarah miserably.

Mrs. Truscott sighed. "Now that you have heard nothings hidden then. We did not want to upset you all.", said Mrs. Truscott. "Mum I promise I won't tell this to Dirk and Phyllis.", said Sarah.

"It's better if you don't. I know it's sad but please try to look as casual as possible. As if, as if nothing's happened.", said Mrs. Truscott.

Sarah nodded. "Now what will happen to us? What will we do? Where do we go? We can't study in our current school any longer I guess.", said Sarah.

"Yes. You are right. I will have to find a job again. We will have to sell everything we have and shift to the countryside. As for your schooling, we will have to enroll you three to the countryside day school and I think your mother will devote some time for your tuition.", said Mr. Truscott.

"You are a clever and sensible girl Sarah. I know it would be very difficult for you but please don't tell this to your siblings.", said Mr. Truscott.

"Yes dad but don't you all think they will come to know some day or the other?", asked Sarah trying to control her emotion. "Yes they will but we will make them understand.", said Mrs. Truscott looking sad.

"We will never again meet our friends? Our maids? Our pets?", asked Sarah tears rolling down her eyes. "I am afraid no.", said Mr. Truscott looking away.

"I think you should not waste any more time but go straight to bed. Try to forget this. You need rest.", said Mrs. Truscott brushing away Sarah's tears. Sarah nodded and without wasting another moment went back to her room and surprisingly she fell into deep sleep as soon as her head touched the pillow.
