By that night, the house was half empty. The unknown people had bought nearly everything. That night Dirk, Sarah and Phyllis slept in the same room as they had only two beds, one in which their parents were sleeping and the other used by the children. Sarah and Phyllis were sleeping on the bed and Dirk was sleeping on a rug on the floor.
The next day they had to pack everything in their luggage. At last when they had finished packing everything and the bulky items like the furnitures had been moved, they took round of the house for the last time. Phyllis touched the walls as they went. "I will miss this place.", said Phyllis. "So will we.", said Dirk putting a hand around her shoulder. After they had done everything, including bading goodbye to their neighbours, they picked up their luggages and went to the large jeep that their father had rented. Mr. Truscott sat at the wheel, Mrs. Truscott beside him, Phyllis, Sarah and Dirk at the back and the luggages at the extreme end.
"We have to leave as early as possible. It is a long journey.", said Mr. Truscott strapping the seat belts. "Dad, we could have easily boarded a plane or train or something to reach faster -". Mrs. Truscott turned backwards facing her back to Mr. Truscott so that he couldn't see and glared at Dirk. Dirk fell silent at once. "Off we go. Look at the streets for the last time kids.", said Mr. Truscott as he started the jeep.
Nobody spoke much during the journey. The atmosphere was filled with melancholy. Phyllis was reading Cinderella for the millionth time, Sarah was reading a book How It Works, which was a book related to Physics and Dirk was staring out of the window minutely observing each and every animal going by. Time to time they could hear their mother sigh.
While they were in the city, they passed many cars and buildings and skyscrapers. Once they were out of the city, they passed huge lush green pastures and meadows. There were very less cars to be seen. Phyllis put her head out of the window. "Ahhh. The wind is so cool."
When evening was setting in, Mrs. Truscott said," I think we should exchange wheel. You must be feeling very tired.". "But you don't know the way.", said Mr. Truscott. "You will give directions and I will drive. I will be perfectly comfortable.", said Mrs. Truscott. "Thanks dear.", said Mr. Truscott. So they stopped the car and exchanged wheels. Soon the pastures gave way to endless moor. The wind seemed to scream past them as they went through the moor.
"Dad, have you gave it a thought where we will be staying or having dinner for the night?", asked Sarah. "Your mother has packed food, we will have that, and I guess you have to sleep by sitting where you are.", said Mr. Truscott. Sarah nodded. After some time they stopped and had their dinner. Nobody was talking. There was an eerie silence in the vast moor broken by sudden hoots of the owl. After finishing their dinner, they continued their journey. Mr. Truscott came to wheel again. Soon after the children were dozing off to sleep. Phyllis had fallen asleep with her mouth open which made her look cute. Dirk was leaning over the window and was dozing. Sarah who was sitting in the middle had gone off to sleep and in her sleep, she had leaned on Dirk and now she had her head on his shoulder.
"Anna dear can you please talk or else I will doze off and we will have an accident.", said Mr. Truscott yawning. So their parents started talking in very low voices. At some point, Mrs. Truscott said, keeping her hand on Mr. Truscott's free hand, "I love you, dear." "I love you too.", said Mr. Truscott and they kissed. Suddenly - "I love you Mommy.", said Phyllis in her sleep. "Do you think she heard us?", asked Mrs. Truscott. "No, she is deep in her sleep.", said Mr. Truscott smiling.
They reached Inglehampton very late at night. They unpacked their luggages, cleaned the floor. The cottage was lovely. It had a very small kitchen garden with many types of herbs, much to Mrs. Truscott's delight. Though the cottage was much smaller it was cozy. It had a living cum dining room, two bedrooms, and one kitchen. The children were so tired that day that they did not go out of the house for the whole day. Mr. Truscott went out in the afternoon to the mill. Mrs. Truscott went to meet their neighbours and to the farm for some fresh milk, bread, jam, ham, etc.
