Living Among the Dead

Macie's POV

Once we got back to the lodge, I brought up the point that we wouldn't have enough medicine after we used most on Sarah's wound, but now Kai's injuries are fatal and Alyson can walk even less than him. At sunrise, Gabe, Sarah, Savannah, and I are splitting up into two teams to go on two runs at the same time. The four of us are trained enough to go even alone, but we don't want to take chances.

Sarah went with me while Savannah and Gabe went together. I'm sure that Savannah would hate it because Gabe would just keep mocking her, but Gabe insisted and Sarah was my first choice. Once our two groups reached the end of the parking lot, we bid our short-term farewells and sped off in different directions.

Sarah directed me to a nearby apothecary. The building was blocked off with faded police tape in front of the doors. I ripped it off and Sarah kicked the door open. Dust was everywhere. It must have been untouched years before the apocalypse. Behind the small desk, I was able to see orange prescription pill bottles. The two of us slid over the desk and began tobago the meds. Luckily most were antibiotics and pain relievers. Both would do good for the squad.

We slid back over the desk and exited the building. Outside of our car, walkers were clawing at the windows. Sarah and I both pulled out our melee weapons. I whistled softly, but it was enough to get the attention of a few corpses. About 7 started to limp awkwardly towards us. I completely yanked the eye out of the first one with my climber's pick. The second one approached me, and I shoved the weapon into the side of it's head. I attempted to pull the melee weapon out, but the blade part was stuck. As for the handle, it broke away, deeming the tool useless.

I stepped back to find another weapon. I needed to act quickly, or else the biters would gang up on Sarah, who seemed to be holding up well. Next to the door, and workbench sat with a toolbox on it. I dug through the meta container until I found a rubber-handled screwdriver with a very long metal part or whatever you call it. Don't judge my knowledge. Everyone in the group still has the knowledge of a second grader without any school.

Anyway, I ran up beside Sarah and planted my feet. A biter approached me and I struck the screwdriver through it's eye. It came out waaaaaaaaay more easily than my pick ever did. I repeated this process until the entire hoard was dead.

Sarah and I got in the car and found out what was drawing the walkers. Savannah was broadcasting over the walkie-talkie.

"MACIE, SARAH, ANYONE!!! WE'RE IN OUR CAR BEING CHASED BY MORE PEOPLE IN BLACK AND OUR CAR'S ALMOST OUT OF GAS! FIND US BY THE INTERSTATE!" She shrieked.

Our engine sprang to life. We accelerated quickly and in no time arrived at the interstate. Sure enough, Gabe and Savannah's pickup was being chased by an SUV all in white. I commanded Sarah to drive our sedan close to the enemy vehicle. I rolled down my window and very carefully maneuvered myself out of it and onto the short roof. I finally gained the nerve, and I leaped.

My hands caught onto the luggage rack. I did a pull-up which allowed me to stand above the sunroof. I stomped on the glass until it shattered. I took my new screwdriver and stabbed it through the head of the driver. Luckily, he was the only person in the car. I ran down the front of the moving car and vaulted off of the hood. My arms flailed in midair until I landed in the bed of the pickup truck that was driven by Gabe. Immediately after I jumped, the SUV swerved off of the road and into a ditch.

The truck slowed to a stop on account of having no gasoline. The three of us got into the car that was driven by Sarah. We arrived at the ski lodge and we all gave Kai and Alyson the medicine. Hailey reported to us that nothing out of the ordinary happened while we were away. All seemed fine, but we had our senses heightened. We all had to be prepared if this 'Cara' person attacked again, and with this squad, we can take anything thrown our way.
