I enjoyed running by myself while no one was around, it felt like freedom after being forced to act all day long.
It was nearly midnight and campus was deserted, a part from Ernie, the deaf gardner, of course. I suspected he was blind too, the poor chap, since he clearly didn't realise he didn't have to work in the middle of the night.
I raised a hand to say hi and he smiled back at me. It was nice to know that, whenever I went running, Ernie would be there too.
I quickened my pace, music filling my ears and giving me more and more energy. The campus athletics tracks were empty, as always at night. But I liked it better that way, I found the absence of shrieking students relaxing and I loved the long shadows created by the lampposts on the empty terraces. Normal people would have probably found it scary, but I was no normal person.
My IPhone beeped interrupting my thoughts and my run, it was time to go back, I needed a shower and a good night's sleep.
"Hey! Give it back!" A boy whined as a group of older boys used his rucksack as a football and he tried chasing them around to get it back.
I watched the scene for a couple of seconds, unsure of what to do. Suddenly the bag broke and all of its contents scattered on the brick path. The boy bent on all fours and started picking up all his stuff in a hurry. One of the bullies, not seeing him, tripped over and fell to the floor.
"Idiot." I muttered to myself.
At that point, what I thought was impossible happened: the bullies started to hit the young boy accusing him of attacking their friend.
Okay, this was enough. I would have normally run away to avoid getting mixed up in all this shit, but, damn, I was getting angry, and I tended to punch people when I was angry.
I snorted as I took my headphones out and tucked them in my pocket. At least I was wearing comfortable clothes this time instead of an evening dress and heels, that had been bloody uncomfortable. I still hadn't figured out how I managed not to sprain my ankles.
"Hey, arseholes!" I called distracting them from the poor boy.
Thankfully, he managed to crawl away. Instead, they were looking at me as if I was crazy. First impressions can be a little deceiving, my long brown hair and big bambi eyes don't really make me look like a badass. But I am, I can guarantee that.
"Yeah, I'm talking to you." I called again. "Would you please do the world a favour and let the boy go?" I asked it in such a nice way I even surprised myself. My mother would be proud.
"What if we said no?" One of them answered. He was skinny and his teeth were everywhere but in the right place.
"Jeez, man, go see a dentist." A disgusted expression painted my face.
Right, what was I saying about my mum being proud? There was no way I was getting out of this without a fight. The guy I insulted turned nearly purple with anger.
Oopsy. I seriously needed to work on my mind filter and get it to stop stuff like this from getting out of my mouth.
"So... that's a no?" I asked once again, feeling a bit sorry for the boy.
The purple guy approached me and started walking around me in circles.
"You sure look delicious. " he said licking his lips hungrily. His friends cheered.
I hated it when men judged me only by my looks, what the heck, I was a clod blooded killer. Though I needed to admit that being underestimated was incredibly useful.
I extended one foot and he tripped over it, his face hitting the ground. He wasn't expecting that.
"Oh, did I break your teeth?" I asked innocently as he spat blood on the ground.
He got up looking livid, if possible, even more purple that before. I was embarrassing him in front of his friends and he hated it. Their cheering had stopped the moment I sent him face to the ground.
"What? Aren't you going to thank me?" I asked with an air of indifference as I studied my nails. I was really good at annoying people.
He took a step forward and tried to punch me in the face, but I intercepted his hand and grabbed his fist holding it tightly.
"Really? Is that all you got?" I was growing bored.
I twisted his arm, holding his shoulder still with my other hand, until I heard a loud crack, then released him. I watched him whine as he cradled his arm near his chest. I shook my head, slightly disappointed.
"Someone else?" I asked stretching my arms. "No?" No one dared to answer. "Good, right choice. I never want to see any of you pick on other students again, otherwise I will personally come to pay you a visit. Are we clear?"
They all nodded angreeingly.
"You cunts! Are you really giving up so easily?" A voice asked. It was a short muscled boy talking. "Come on! You can't even take this girl? I swear I more balls than all of you combined!"
This was going to be fun.
He came towards me showing off like a pompous peacock.
"Are you really sure you want to do this, boy?" I asked him, trying hard not to laugh.
"Bitch, I'm a girl." She answered putting herself in what looked like a sort of fake taekwondo fighting position.
"Be careful, I'm a martial arts fighter." She warned me.
"Oh, are you now?" I faked an impressed voice. "Then bring it, girl. " I was really going to enjoy this.
She came closer and started yelling and moving her arms frantically. She aimed at my belly, but I slapped her hand away. Then she went for my neck, but I stopped that one too. She kept on punching and I kept on intercepting her hands. She was getting frustrated, I was getting bored.
"Okay, enough." I announced. "You clearly can't beat me, so let it go."
She looked like she was thinking about accepting my offer, but then she punched me in the face. I brought a hand to my face as I tasted blood in my mouth.
"Well, that was unexpected. " I smirked getting really really angry. I clenched my fists and punched her straight in the jaw. Boy, I loved how that satisfactory grin was wiped away from her face. I might even have broken her jaw.
Her hands flew to her face as she doubled over. I landed another punch in her stomach and eased her all the way down to the ground so she wouldn't fall.
I really wasn't a sadistic bitch, but she pissed me off.
"And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what happens when you learn martial arts in Great Britain instead of Asia. Now go to bed." I announced standing up and plugging my earphones back in. I started running towards my dorm room as the bullies helped their fallen friends.
The unlucky boy was nowhere to be seen.
