It was starting to get late and, once again, my dad was late for dinner. I'd normally eat by myself, since I had no mother and was an only child, but he always told me to wait. "Patience is a virtue, cherish and practice it" he kept repeating this to me every time I ate before he got home. My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door opening.

--hey Humphrey -- he said with a small smile.

--you're late -- I replied -- again

--come on, you know how harsh work can be sometimes -- he said, trying to protect his authority, or something like that.

--does it count if you control your own work time?! -- I asked while giving him a glare. We stood in silence -- I rest my case -- I said, and looked back at the table.

So, how was school? -- he asked, trying to change the conversation.

--You know exactly how, perfect scores and home early! -- I said, almost shouting at him, but with a menacing tone.

--Humph, you... -- I interrupted him mid-sentence

--DON'T, call me like that!!! -- I shouted with fury.

--Ok, HUMPHREY, you know how I feel when you do those things. I know you're smart, but it's not ok to smush it in other people's faces. -- he said, trying to put his arm on my back.

--Alright, first off, -- I said, pulling his arm off my back. -- why do you call it school? It's COLLEGE. And second, look who's talking. You say we have to be humble when you earn a thousand bucks every hour?-

--Humphrey, you know what I mean.--
He said, slightly annoyed.

--Oh, sure that's the virtue of having an genius for a father -- I said in a sarcastic tone. He stayed quiet for a moment

--Let's just eat. -- he said, obviously defeated.

I ate quickly and went upstairs to my room to think. 'Seriously, the nerve of that guy' I thought to myself. I couldn't stand him, he said he was there, but barely. The most we talk with each other is in discussions, and the most we spend time with each other is eating dinner, that's it. 'well, it's getting late, so I guess I'll go to-huh?'. Once again, my thoughts were interrupted, by a call? It's not my cellphone, cause it's coming from outside my window. I sneaked to my window to check out the call, and what I saw made me smile. I saw Hannah, my girlfriend, and Raymond, my best friend.

--Hey, tiger, you coming down any time soon?-- said Hannah, in a kind of sassy voice.

--About time you two got here, -- I said, getting a backpack hidden in my room and climbing out the window. --I was starting to get bored, and worried that you got lost--

--Well, we would've gotten here sooner, if it wasn't for SOMEONE here wanting to buy something on the way here. -- Raymond said, looking at Hannah right beside him.

--Hey, don't look at me like that, it was worth it. You'll see in a couple of minutes. -- Hannah said, making me a little curious. I gave her a kiss and hugged her.

--Hey sweetie, how you been? -- I said, parting from the hug.

--I can last, but I've been waiting for you, you know. -- she said, looking at me.

--Oh, COME ON you guys, GET A ROOM! -- Said Raymond, looking away from us.

--Hey, calm down, Ray, or maybe you'll be next to get a peck in the lips from me. -- I said, looking at him. He looked back at me, suprised, and kind of disgusted, and Hannah and I started laughing.

--Well, enough of that, get in the car and let's go -- he said, while getting into the driver's seat.

We went to sit down, I left Hannah in the front, and I went in the back. On the way of wherever we were going, Hannah looked back at me and gave me some kind of present.

--What is this? -- I said, holding the package.

--Happy birthday, sweetie -- she said with an overly excited face.

--But, my birthday is in a week -- I said, a little confused.

--Well, I wanted to give it to you then, but I couldn't wait to see your face when you opened it. -- she said, and she pushed the present to me. -- Come on, open it.--

I looked down and started opening the present. when I saw the contents, I couldn't believe them.

--You got me a, A DRONE?!?! -- I shouted in excitement.

--I knew how much you wanted one, and with the fact that you can build one out of scrap, I decided to keep you from going through the WHOLE process. -- She said, smiling. I looked at her, and I hugged her and smiled back

--Thank you, so much. -- I said, parting from the hug and going back to the present. -- But this must've cost a fortune.

--Money doesn't matter, you know that. --she said, still smiling. I looked at her, and I remembered some thing that took away the happiness of that moment.

--Yeah, it isn't. -- I said, with a more serious face.

--Anything wrong? -- she asked, with her smile getting smaller.

--No, everything's ok. Thank you Hannah. -- I said, trying to forget about the thought

She got back to looking forward to the road again, even though it was dark, and sat back down. --told you. --
She said, obviously to Raymond. He rolled his eyes and kept driving.

*Dad's POV*
--Humphrey, you know what I mean-- I said, trying to calm him down.

--Oh, sure, that's the virtue of having a genius for a father -- he said. I stayed there, quiet, in shock, for what he had just said. I didn't think of anything to say.

--Let's just eat -- I said, trying to fight off a tear, and hiding a sad voice.

He ate quickly and went to his room, he obviously didn't want to stay with me. I heard the door slam, I pushed the plate away and rested my head on the table. 'Oh, Toby, what did you do wrong? when did you fail as a father?' I thought to myself. I wanted to be more time with him, but the work, and I think the fact that he knows he's adopted, doesn't help my case. 'He's going through what I got through, except 1-my parents weren't famous, 2-I am not adopted and 3-I actually love my son' I thought. I heard the same car that I heard yesterday parking behind the house. I knew who it was and what they were gonna do. At least I know that Humphrey is having fun, but, I want him to have fun with me too. I stood up and went to the window to see them, and I saw them laughing and getting into the car. A part of me wanted to barge into the car with them, but another part told me not to, otherwise this situation would get worse. I heard something from my pocket, my cellphone was ringing. I answered it to see who it was.

--TobyTech industries, how may I help you? --I said, acting as one of my workers.

--Yes, I am looking for Toby Raynose, is he available? -- said a deep male voice from the other side of the line.

--Yeah, this is him, what is it? -- I said, kinda tiredly.

--Well, sir, I'm calling to talk about the latest meeting we're going to have, I don't want any mishaps, you know. --he said

--Excuse me, who am I talking to again? -- I asked, kind of nervously.

--Oh, my bad, I am Dr. Thomas 'Techno' Kreiman, CEO of Techno Advancements Incorporated, or TAI.-- he said.

--Oh, my, excuse my attitude Dr. Kreiman. -- I replied nervously again

--Do not worry about that Dr. Raynose, all I want to know is if everything is fine and dandy on the meeting next weekend. --he said, calming me down.

--Well, yes, actually, we have no problems or mishaps for the meeting. Plus, it will be a magnificent time to show my latest "lifeguard", if I might call it like that. -- I said, as if I was doing a commercial of some sort.

--Well, good, cause if this meeting doesn't go well, you'll need that "lifeguard" more than anyone. -- he said, making me nervous again.

--Oh, well *gulp* yes, Dr. Kreiman. -- I said

--Don't fail me Raynose. -- he said, then hung up.

I put my cellphone back in my pocket and just went straight to my bed and layer down. I needed to calm down, but at one side I have my work that if I slip once I'm done for, and on the other side I have my son that another slip up and I lose my son. My life is just so complicated. What do I do?
