Chapter 6: Ellie gets her training (Allison's POV)
The gate rattled and shook at it shut down behind us. I really hoped that the boys were going to be ok. I didn't like the idea of us being separated, but at least we'd have a better chance of finding Diana. If one of us got her first, we could go back in the maze and find the other team and then we could all leave together. But we couldn't get there fast enough if Ellie wouldn't help us. We decided to train her, since we had four months to get her. The Skull Man had sent us a video transmission 9 months ago. He said that if we did not destroy the world by the next spring equinox, he would come here and do it himself. But if we gave him the petals of the Earth's most important flower, we could live in peace in the After World, the world of the dead, while we watched the world fall. 3 months later, I had discovered my twin, Bri, "borrowing" famous artifacts from the Smithsonian museum, and I ended up in jail. It was a long story, but it involved an idiotic move from my cousin Daniel. I found out that Bri's dad was Bruce Wayne himself, and he and Bri broke me out of jail. We started searching for the two other petals, after discovering that she was the earth petal, and I was the fire petal. WE were looking for a woman, who supposedly knew who and where the petals were, and I somehow ended up fighting a quite attractive caramel-eyed kiss-wanting jerk. Well, I thought he was attractive, until I discovered that he was my idiotic, narcissistic, yet sweet and nice, older brother. We didn't get along at first, especially because he tried to kiss me and I beat the crap out of him (come on, Clay, I totally crushed you). But we learned, and he got a little protective over me. We found Ellie at Neptune High School, as we were sent there to retrieve her undercover. Clay was James, my skater brother, Connor was a football jock with really nice hair and according to SOME girls really nice biceps, and Bri was a preppy blonde cheerleader. Now we were in the Never World. Before we had left, it was the first day of winter. Who knows how much time has passed since then? We weren't exactly sure how time worked in this planet. But nonetheless, we had to train Ellie.
"Okay, so.... Do your thing Ellie!"
"What the hell? You're supposed to be telling me what to do! You saw me out there! If we were in the Hunger Games, I would be dead within the first millisecond."
"Well, Allison and I don't use water."
"Well then, what do you do to control your element?"
We thought about it. It wasn't really easy to explain. It just came to me. When I retrieve my fire, I don't think about anything, really.
"Just try to keep your mind blank, but wait for something to bubble up inside of you," I advised. "Just close your eyes and don't think about anything." I looked through the backpack that the man had given us. "Really? No flashlight? They can see that it's like pitch dark down here right?" I found three water bottles at the bottom of the bag. I opened one and I placed it on the ground next to Ellie. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. For a while, she was still. There was silence in the tunnel. The water in the bottle began to ripple. Soon, it slowly began to climb out of the bottle. It clung to the plastic until it had finally managed to escape from it. The water formed into a small ball and started shaking aggressively. Ellie was losing focus. I thought of trying to console her, but talking could probably just cause her to lose her focus right away. I waited to see what would happen. The ball kept vibrating, and suddenly, Ellie couldn't hold it anymore. The ball of water exploded and splattered everywhere. I was drenched in water. Somehow, Ellie was able to make the ball of water bigger, but when she lost her focus, the ball exploded.
"Okay... That was a good start," I said, as I warmed up and turned the droplets of water into steam. Soon, I was completely dry. "We should probably get moving. The boys are probably way ahead by now," Bri recommended.
"But we don't have a flashlight," Ellie reminded us. They both looked at me. I groaned and ignited. I threw a ball of fire down the tunnel. For three seconds of its flight, there was nothing, but soon, it impacted with a wall. There were two different paths: one to the left and one to the right. "Take the one on the left! It'll lead us to the boys!" I yelled as I sprinted towards the end of the tunnel. I accidentally ran too fast and ended up slamming into the wall. It was hard and cold, and freakishly damp. Bri helped me up and we ran into the left tunnel. My body became engulfed in flames, and I was the human torch of the hour. The path soon split into three. Each one was only big enough for one of us. "Why don't we just get in a line and walk in a straight line into one of those paths?" Ellie suggested. We tried to do that. But as soon as Bri tried to step in after me, a chunk of the ground rose up and closed the path. I was all alone. I banged on the blockade. "BRI! ELLIE! JUST KEEP GOING! I'LL MEET YOU GUYS AT THE CENTER!"
"BE CAREFUL, ALLISON!"
I started walking down the hallway. I felt kind of bad, leaving Bri and Ellie without a light source. I walked and walked for ages upon ages, until I thought I saw something.
"Allison? Is that you?" I heard them say. It was Connor. I started running to meet him. I wrapped my arms around his neck. "I'm so glad you're okay! I was so worried about you!" He wouldn't look at me for some reason. "Is something wrong?" I asked him. He looked at me, smiling. And then he just kissed me. It was weird, but I think I kind of liked it. I closed my eyes and we were in our own little world, away from this mess. I let him slowly move away from my lips and onto my neck. "Connor, we should really go try to meet up with the others." Connor didn't listen. He just kept kissing me. Just then I heard a scream from behind the wall. "Connor! That sounded like Bri! We really need to go!" I said, trying to gently push him away from me. And then there was a sharp pain on my neck. "Connor, that was a little hard. Connor! You're hurting me!" He pulled himself away from me. Blood was dripping from his mouth. His eyes were red. "Connor, what happened to you?" I asked. I felt extremely lightheaded. I fought to keep my eyes open. "Nothing. You're just seeing the real me."
