lunch.tyler ate in the corner of the cafeteria in the shadows, alone. josh usually ate in the library, because the librarian -- ms. ryan -- had probably taken pity on him. that happened to josh often, in his mind.
but today, josh's friend convinced him to go in the cafeteria for the sake of socialization. that friend was the spontaneous brendon urie, who had befriended josh for no real reason in eighth grade. well, the reason was probably pity, josh supposed.
he walked into the cafeteria, the unbridled noise and clanging and talking and plates and energy and people igniting a headache. once he'd walked in too far to turn back around, he promptly panicked but turned around and brendon was standing behind him.
"you really think i'd desert you, buddy?" he said, grinning. "hey, let's go sit over here."
wow. incredible. brendon headed straight for the tyler joseph™ table. josh had no choice but to follow him, even if all the ringing in his head tried persuading him against it.
"heya," brendon said, standing over the somehow warmly-shadowy tyler. "mind if we just hang here?"
tyler started shaking his head, before looking up and catching josh's eyes.
josh could've sworn tyler's eyes were glowing. he caught his own breath and sat down, sighing; brendon followed with a bit more -- a lot more -- certainty.
