Shabby walls towered around me as I strutted down a shady alley. My eyes using the tiny amount of light permeating through the dank air to absorb every minutiae detail in my surroundings. Alongside the best avoided black bin bags and suspicious pools of rancid liquid I passed I could also hear a deep base beat just ahead accompanied by the far more appealing beat of many hearts racing in a nearby club. My throat burned as though someone had jammed a poker down. The heightened senses, that still amazed me, could also detect other more distant and isolated throbs of blood from lone figures braving the dark streets, but they were almost inconsequential compared to the hive of life that stood just metres away from me.

The cluster of throbbing pulses drew me nearer to the glowing neon sign that proclaimed 'Violetta' at the end of the passage. The battered dark green door was partially blocked by a burly, suit-clad man who could only be described as a brute. The brute began raking his depraved eyes over me hungrily and angling himself towards me. Unfortunately for him the fat that thickened his neck did nothing to hide the flicker of pulse just below his ear as he positioned himself so our skin came into contact.

I saw his eyes widen as he brushed against my stone cold skin but I was distracted from this as I felt the warmth of blood beneath the tattoos that sprawled across his skin. Without a second thought my hands wrapped around his beefy neck and his considerable amount of muscle tensed until my teeth were buried deep in his flesh and his body became a dead weight against me. Yet the load barely registered on my senses as pure, unadulterated pleasure flooded my body. The warm gush was indescribable. So many worlds away from the mouthfuls of sour lion blood I had consumed just days before. A sense of such power flooded through me...ironically I had never felt more alive. Just as the blood flow faltered hands wrapped around my shoulders and hauled me back.

"What on Earth are you doing?" A disbelieving voice said sounding almost amused. "This has to be some of the sloppiest hunting I have ever seen! Plus I really didn't appreciate you running out on me like that...you're lucky I found the goodness in my heart to come and sort you out. You look like you really need it." Suddenly I became all too aware of the rivers of blood streaked down my chin and dripping to my chest that I had not noticed before that moment. I dragged my palm hurriedly across my chin and licked every droplet of scarlet liquid from it.

"I'm sure I can manage." I said once I had cleaned myself up best I could. I turned my attention to the blond figure in front of me who was squatted down in front of the limp mountain of flesh whose life blood was currently smeared across my skin.

"You really have made a right mess of it, Bella." James commented airily hoisting himself into full standing position.

"We can't all be perfect." I drawled sarcastically with no apology colouring my tone. I could still feel the power surging through my limbs and no amount of jibes from a certain blonde vampire could combat that sort of a good mood.

"We're going to have to get rid of the body...let's just think of it as your first experience as a proper vampire." He said frankly poking the dark mass before him with the toe of his boot and smirking at me over his shoulder.

"Sounds like a lot of fun." I replied mirroring his sardonic expression. At my reply he reached into his pocket, drawing out a flask and an old-fashioned flip top lighter. He unscrewed the flask and the sharp smell of alcohol hit my noise. With a flourish he poured the clear liquid over the corpse before us before handing me the cool metal lighter.

"Would you care to do the honours?" He asked raising his eyebrows almost as though this was a challenge.

"Love to." I said without missing a beat and with that I flicked the lighter open so the small flame cast light over the pock-marked walls. I gazed at the flame momentarily before glancing up at James. The sharp angles of his face were illuminated eerily by the flickering flame, he was almost hypnotising with his beauty, then without glancing down I let the lighter slip through my fingers.

The walls were quickly thrown into sharp relief by the roaring blaze behind me as I walked away side by side with Jamie without glancing back; a feeling of cool empowerment blossoming in my chest.
