Chapter Three: New Neighbours

(Booker's POV)

I have always liked meeting new furs. However, my best experience for meeting someone new was when I met Kal. It was freshman year of college and I was going to my first class, which at the time was a science class.

"Good morning everyone and welcome to my science class." Miss. Melinda began. We all paid attention to the feline. Her bushy tail always seemed to be wagging and she was always smiling.

Kal was very shy when I first met him, he still is, but not around me anymore. He was a mess the first year of college and sometimes I feel that he still is. The first time I walked up to him was one day after school. He was sitting alone under a large oak tree reading a book. He always had a thing for English and Science, but he was terrible at Math. When I walked up to him I asked, "Hey. Um...can I sit?" Kal looked up from his book, "Uh yeah...sure." I sat down next to him. "My name is Booker." I said. "Oh...cool...I mean...uh...my name is Kalvin. But I go by Kal." he replied in a nervous tone. "Well, it is nice to meet you Kal!" I said as I held out my paw for a pawshake. He hesitated for a moment before taking my paw and shaking it. "It's nice to meet you too Booker." he said shaking my paw. "So what are you reading?" I asked. He put in his bookmark and shut the book and replied, "To Kill a Mockingbird. Its one of my favourite books." I looked at the book for a moment then said, "Huh...I've never read it." Kal got up, leaned down and threw his backpack onto his shoulder. He reached down his paw to help me up. I grabbed his paw and pulled myself up. "Where do you live?" I asked.

"The apartment complex, over by The Feline Café."

"I live there too!"

"Oh, well, do you maybe...want to walk home...together?"

"Yeah, let's go."

We walked back to the apartment complex, conversing about our classes that we never knew we had together.

I woke up that Saturday morning and began getting ready for work. The bookstore had been having some construction done on it so I got the week off. I only had to work from 9:00 - 1:00 today.

I sat up in my bed and stretched. I looked over at my alarm clock, it read 7:30. I walked over to my dresser and picked out my work clothes and boxers. My work clothes included a pair of dark blue jeans and a green, polo shirt. I took my clothes and hopped in the shower. After I was done I walked downstairs and made myself a bowl of cereal.

I grabbed my phone, wallet and keys from the counter before heading out the door. I closed the door behind me and bumped into a lady fur. "Oh, sorry. Excuse me," I said making my way around her. She had a large box in her paws and was walking into the apartment across from mine. "You're okay." she said. She had vivid ocean blue fur and long, wavy, blond head fur. "Oh. You must be the new furs moving in?" I asked. "Yeah. We moved here from out west!" she said happily. I held out my paw for a pawshake and said, "I'm Booker by the way." She sat the box down on the floor and took my paw in hers and shook. "I'm Lilly. It's a pleasure to meet you Booker." she said in a polite tone. A black fured wolf came up the stairs. "They really need to get the elevator working." he said holding another large box. He saw me and froze. "Um...hi..." he said. He moved around Lilly and went into the apartment quickly. "Who is that?" I asked. She looked at me and answered, "Oh, that's Stark. He's, uh, really shy. Sorry about that." "That's fine. Hey, it was nice meeting you. I'm heading to work right now. I'll be back by one. Maybe you could come over and we could all hang?" I said pulling out my phone to look at the time. It read 8:45. "Yeah. We could do that. I'd have to see if Stark would want to but I will for sure." she said. "Okay. See you then." I said turning and running down the stairs.

I walked out of the apartment complex and onto the crowded sidewalk. I trotted down to the bookstore. My manager was inside ready to greet me. "Morning Booker," she said. "Good morning Mrs. Ballwick," I replied.

That day at work was slow. Not very many customers came today and those that did bought very little. Once 1:00 hit I was ready to leave.

I left the bookstore and on my way home I stopped by The Feline Café for some coffee. I got my coffee and went back to my apartment. It was 1:30 and I decided to go ask Lilly and Stark if they wanted to come over and chat.

I raised my paw to the door to knock. *Knock knock knock* Lilly came and opened the door. "Oh, hello Booker!" she said. "Hey, I wanted to know if you guys would like to come over for lunch?" I asked. "Um, yeah, hold on." she shut the door for a moment and came back. "I'll come over, but uh, Stark doesn't want too," she said. "Why not? It's okay if he does, I don't mind." I said. She went back inside and came back out a moment later. Stark was behind her.

We all walked into my apartment. "Take a seat guys." I said, motioning for them to sit. Lilly and Stark took a seat at the kitchen table. "So, what are you guys hungry for?" I asked. Lilly said, "I want a ham sandwich!" I looked over at Stark. "Oh, uh, I uh, want the same," he said, his voice shaky.

I got the bread, ham, and cheese out of the refrigerator. I would catch Stark starring at me and when I would look at him he would stop. He seems to be more than just shy. Maybe he's just really anti-social.

I finished the sandwiches and put them on plates. "Here you go," I said handing Lilly her sandwich. "Thank you Booker," she said. I handed Stark his sandwich. He looked up at me and said, "Uh, Th-Thank you." I grabbed my sandwich and sat at the kitchen table with Stark. He didn't talk much. "So Stark," I began. "why did you and Lilly move to FoxTrot?" He looked up from eating his sandwhich and answered, "Oh, well, uh, we moved here because Lilly got a new job. She's a ,uh," He cut out and Lilly finished answering the question. "I'm working at the college. I'm the new art teachers assistant. I also work at the art store Paw Paintings. And we didn't move here just for that. We just got sick of our old town." she said.

We finished our lunch and we all talked, well, me and Lilly talked. Stark would talk about small things but he remained quiet a lot. It was about 3:30 when Lilly said that they should go back to their apartment. They left my apartment and went back home. I was glad to make new friends or a friend. I guess its going to take a little bit for Stark to fully open up to me.
