Hermione is part of Max's flock, called Hermes because of how she would fly all over the place collecting information and bringing it back to the flock, like a messenger. Someone shows up at one of the flock's makeshift houses and tells them Hermes is a witch, they give her a fake identity (cause seriously, Hermes Ride, come on man) and she goes to Hogwarts (they had been in England at the time, Hogwarts was the closest school.) They go through all of the Voldemort stuff, and in "eighth year" the flock finds a way to get to Hogwarts since they had no other ways to contact "Hermione" cause the Owls can't find anyone without an address and they have no address. So they find "Hermione" at Hogwarts, because Angel was kidnapped by the School (remember that?) So they get to Hogwarts and burst into the dining room yelling "Hermes" and Hermione responds by tensing then turning around and jumping from her seat to go the people and everyone is absolutely silent cause they're wondering who the fuck burst in calling Hermione, Hermes. So they hear the whole conversation with them explaining how Angel was kidnapped and stuff so they're really confused and they get even more confused when "Hermione" just takes off her Hogwarts clothes leaving her in a tank top and jeans when all of a sudden they notice she has this tattoo of wings on her back. Draco, of course, comments on it but then HOLY FUCK the tattoo disappears and in its place are REAL WINGS and she just runs off and the story is about how everyone flips out until like a week or so later she returns and acts like nothing happened until the Headmaster is like "Hermes, dear, I think you ought to explain..."
