Marinette and Adrien are from wizarding families, but Adrien was homeschooled for years, and when his father decided to end his homeschooling he couldn't send him to Hogwarts in the middle of the year, so he went to muggle school. Marinette, on the other hand, has gone to Beauxbatons for years, and has spent the last year learning how to blend in with muggles with her parents.
When the Tri-Wizard Tournament comes up, it's Adrien's first year at a wizard school, and he's missing his friends back in France. He didn't expect anything to come from the Tournament, especially not seeing one of his first friends amidst a crowd of Veela's, and most definitely not realizing that she herself was one. So when he does, he's shocked, and unsure of why he got so jealous when one of his new friends, Ron, as well as almost every male in the school, started drooling all over her.
