"Faster ladies! If you want to make it to Playoffs you will need to push!"
I gasped, completely out of breath, but kept running. My legs felt as if they were going to fall off at any second, but it didn't matter. I was a leader of this team and I needed to act like one.
"5...4...3...2...1" I heard her count down as I passed the line tied in first place with Rachel, the other team captain. "Everyone other than Rachel and Sarah may step off to the side and do jumping jacks. Rachel and Sarah- on my whistle!" She blew it and I took off again with all of my might. I was used to this game coach would play. She always wanted to see who was stronger.
"3...2...1..." I sprinted across with everything I had and made it just in time, but so had Rachel. "Again." She screamed and blew her whistle.
"Come on you've got this Sarah," I thought to myself.
"And done!" I heard coach say as I passed the line again, for what seemed like the hundredth time this practice. I collapsed to the ground and drank down all the water that was left in my bottle. "Good practice ladies, see you tomorrow." I heard coach say as she turned to walk off to her office. I stayed seated on the cold grass and slowly caught my breath again.
"I don't know how you do it," Kate said. She grabbed my hand and helped me stand up.
"Me neither," I replied bending over, still not completely back to normal.
Kate put my arm around her back and helped me back into the locker room. Once I was in, I sat down on the team couch and tried to completely feel normal again.
"Well that was a nice shot you gave out there," Rachel snarled sarcastically while passing me to get to her locker.
"You too," I replied rolling my eyes.
Rachel had always had a problem with me, but I never knew why. I had never hurt her or been mean to her myself. In fact, we used to be really close in middle school. We had sleepovers and played on the same team. Then, once high school came she turned into a completely different person and never talked to me unless it was to say something rude.
"Whatever. Anyways, don't forget about getting the new soccer balls for tomorrows practice," she said with a bored tone. She walked out of the room before I could even reply.
What was her problem? Why did she have to act like this? I knew we weren't as close, but didn't our old friendship mean anything to her? One thing was certain: if she didn't start treating me like her equal leader instead of someone below her our team would fall apart soon. Very soon.
I grabbed my stuff out of my locker and made my way towards my car. My legs were still killing me, but at least I could breathe normal again. Once I got to my car I threw my stuff into the back and took off to the front of the school. I immediately saw my sister laying down across a bench and playing on her phone. I honked my horn, which got her attention rather quickly. She made her way over to me and jumped into the passenger side.
How was your day?" I asked curiously.
"It was pretty good," she replied looking out her window.
The rest of the car ride home was silent, except for the music coming from my radio.
Once we got home, I grabbed my stuff and hurried inside. "I'm home," I shouted.
"Oh good. I was getting worried," my dad said grabbing his brief case. He gave me a kiss and then gave one to Nicole. "Chris is upstairs. He should be doing homework. There are pizza rolls for dinner. I should be home by 9:30" He said in a rush before waving goodbye and dashing out the door.
