The project was long and tedious. It was a lot harder than the original project; there was no argument for that. But James never complained. Not once. And for that I was thankful.
It was around nine when James' mom came in.
"You guys hungry? We just finished dinner. I didn't want to interrupt," she asked.
I looked over at James and saw him giving her a stare as if to say 'get outta here'. I looked back over at his mom and gave her a huge smile. "That'd be fantastic!" I replied. I heard James give a small groan. I didn't understand why he was so upset.
His mom rolled her eyes at him and I laughed. "Okay, come on down with me."
I followed her down the stairs. James had reluctantly followed. He was still mumbling about his mom coming in, but I couldn't figure out why. I, for one, was starving since I hadn't eaten since one.
Once downstairs, a little girl and a little boy ran up to me and wrapped their tiny arms around my legs. I had never met them before and James had never introduced me. I didn't know who they were and I suddenly felt like an invader.
The two kids looked similar. They both had blonde hair and blue eyes, just like James. Other than these similarities the two looked nothing like James. The two of them, though, looked like exact replicas of one another only in two different bodies and genders. I looked at James for an explanation.
James sighed and shook his head. "Taylor and Tyler get off of my friend," he said.
My heart jumped at the word friend. I wasn't sure why. That's what we were, right? We were friends.
I tuned back into what was happening before me.
James had both kids, Taylor and Tyler I presumed, in his arms.
"Sorry about that. Say you're sorry," he said partially to me and partially to the kids he held in his arms.
"Sorry!" they both sang before jumping out of James' arms, and taking off again and running around the house.
"You never told me you had siblings," I said casually.
"Yea, well I don't like to bring it up. And last time you were over they had a play date. Too bad they didn't tonight," he rolled his eyes and walked into the kitchen. "But I'm really sorry about that. They're handfuls and I don't like when people see into my life this much. Too late with you," he sighed.
I couldn't help but think about how much that statement related to my life. I hated people seeing the crazy life I had. And I'd done a good job keeping it a secret so far.
"It's okay, really. They're so cute anyway!" I replied. "How old are they?"
"They're five. They're in that crazy stage where they always have way too much energy, ya know?" he answered while taking out the leftover lasagna.
I nodded my head remembering when Chris was at that age.
James heated the two plates of lasagna in silence.
When the microwave dinged he took them out and we sat at the table. We made casual talk and ate.
"Wow, that was really good," I said finishing off my plate.
James laughed. "Thanks, well I guess thanks from my mom since she made it."
I laughed too. James started to take my plate but I swapped his hand before he could grab it.
"Hey! What's that for?" he whined while rubbing his hand.
"I can wash the plate myself ya know," I replied.
