The next morning went as normal as every other morning. I woke up, got dressed, ate breakfast, left the house with my siblings in tow, dropped Chris off, and arrived at school.
I was already running late since my alarm clock had decided to not work. So I went straight to Physics. I had no time to spare and by the time I had sat down next to James the bell rang.
James gave me a small smile and I smiled back before turning to pay attention to Mrs. Williams.
Class went relatively fast and when the bell rang to dismiss us I turned to James. "Did you turn in the project?" I asked.
"Of course! We didn't work hard for nothing!" he laughed.
I rolled my eyes and headed off to English class.
Soon the rest of my morning ended and I was at lunch. I was glad because I was exhausted and wanted to go home as soon as possible. I was ready for school to finish, as well as soccer practice, which I was already dreading.
"Hey girl, what's up?" I asked taking a seat next to Kate. She gave me a hard glance. Was she mad at me? Or was she just pretending? You could never tell with Kate.
"What's the matter?" I asked with concern.
"Where were you this weekend?" she growled at me.
"Over at James house'", I replied. Why was she asking me? Did it really matter?
"What!" she yelled. Everyone around us in the cafeteria turned and gave us a look.
"Shhh", I said trying to cover her mouth. But she moved away from me and wouldn't let me.
"Did you really forget about this weekend?" she asked.
I searched my mind trying to figure out what she was talking about. We didn't have plans. I was sure of it. "What are you talking about?" I asked.
Apparently, that was the worst thing to say at that particular moment. "My birthday! My party! My hangout! You missed my flippin' birthday to hang with some guy who's probably just using you for good grades and hoping to get to you. Well looks like it's working!" she stormed out of the cafeteria leaving me speechless and all alone.
The afternoon dragged on and on. It was just the opposite of the fast classes this morning. And it was obvious it was because of the lunchroom incident. How could I forget my best friend's birthday?! Sure, I had a small excuse because of homework. But I knew that didn't give me a right to hurt Kate. After all, she is my best friend. Well, was I guess.
When the final bell finally rang I took my time getting down to the soccer fields. I didn't want to face Kate. How could I make this up to her? I wasn't sure if I actually could.
"Alright ladies. Line up on the line", Coach Fargo said too calmly. I hated hearing those words, just like every other athlete in the world. I know running helps you, but there's a difference between running for fitness and running for punishment. And running for fitness was always at the end of practice.
"As you know, I can be a very strict coach", Coach Fargo said. We all nodded in agreement until we saw the look on coach's face. The look that said 'don't mess with me'. "I hate being that strict coach. I enjoy having fun. But some people on this team have decided it's okay to disgrace this team's name. I don't tolerate that. There was graffiti on the soccer boy's locker room used from our stuff. Every letter is a sprint. And let me tell you...there were a lot."
I stared at her with big eyes. Who in the world had done that? And what in the world had they written?
I tried to make the best out of the situation and take the chance to work with Kate. I went to stand by her, but she immediately moved to the other side of Rachel to talk to Lily, another girl on our team.
