Happy reading!!
It wasn't an accident.
A tree almost crushed Chris and I and it wasn't an accident?
My body went cold. "Wh-at are you saying Caleb?"
I inhaled and looked at him again. "That I almost got my skull hammered in and it wasn't an accident?"
He nodded once.
"What was it then?" I whispered.I said it so softly. They couldn't have heard. I knew they didn't. I didn't want them to. I didn't want an answer.
I stared at my trembling hands in silence, hoping it was a mistake or I would at least wake up, realizing it was just a dream.
But silence never made anything go away and I wouldn't wake up realizing this was a dream. This was real. I needed to know.
I clenched my fist and looked into his eyes.
"How was it not an accident?
He opened his mouth to answer but the police officer beat him to it.
"I'll take it from here." He patted Caleb on the back.
The officer stepped forward and stretched his hand forward for me to shake it.
"Good morning, Miss Launter. I am Constable Sanchez. My team and I will be leading this investigation."
He was a middle age, no nonsense kinda guy, around six feet tall. He looked intimidating. I was intimidated.
I looked at him from head to toe and back up, forgetting I should be shaking his hand. His eyes raised expectantly and I looked at his outstretched hand and blushed.
I quickly wiped my sweaty palm on my jeans and shook his hand.
He nodded. "Now, it would be best if you two came down to the station, in a more formal setting so that I could asked you guys some questions privately. But since we are already here."
He cleared his throat and took a notepad out of his pocket.
I frowned. "I can do that, but I would like to know what I'm up against first," I said nervously.
He opened the notepad and began.
"Unfortunately, at such an early stage in the investigation, the perpetrator could be anyone. So everyone is a suspect until they are ruled out. You understand?"
I looked to Caleb and Chad who rolled their eyes then to mom who simply scoffed.
They wouldn't hurt me. Right? What am I thinking? Of course they wouldn't. What reason would they have to do this to me?
I shook my head. "I understand Constable Sanchez but no one in this room would try to kill me! It has to be someone else."
I squeezed the pillow on the bed tightly as I said all of that. But I wasn't sure if I was trying to convince him or myself.
His face remained impassive but he stood firm about what he said.
He sighed when he realised I wouldn't cave so easily. "Miss Launter, sometimes it's the person you least expect. Usually someone that is close to you."
