Chapter 5 The Pain of Loss

Amira

We rushed out the doorway in a haste to get to the bridge and hopefully avoid any more wild battles. We ran for less than fifteen seconds down the large pillared cave, before we heard the sounds of goblin screeches.

The hobbits turned around fearfully but I shook my head and gently pushed them forward. They turned back hastily and as the screeching of the goblins grew louder, the faster and more frantically they ran. Aragorn hurriedly turned around but I pushed him forward and I shook my head, “Just run!”

“This way!” Gandalf shouted, his staff lighting our path. However, up from the ground before us crawled out more goblins. Their numbers rapidly increasing.

But that was not all, from above, in cracks in the ceiling, out came a wave of sticky footed goblins. Their appearance not unlike a swarm of insects, they completely surrounded us and we stopped, holding our breaths in fear.

A particularly nasty looking goblin hissed and bared its teeth at Pippin, who gulped and backed away. I stood in front of him protectively and glared at the goblin, who shrank back into the shadows of his fellow kin.

It remained this way where we just seemed to stare back at the goblins who stood in a large circle surrounding us, waiting for the next move. They made strange screeching, inquiring sounds as they watched us intently.

Suddenly, a deep rumble sounded from the darkness, echoing in the deep. The goblins screeching grew fearful and frantic as if calling out to each other. They scampered back to their dwellings seemingly in fear of the horridly unsettling rumblings.

I swallowed, What kind of evil is this that those of the same darkness could fear? Gimli, seemingly deaf, shouted triumphantly, thinking himself the one who frightened the nasty beings. We watched as the swarm dispersed and separated from each other, cowering in fear.

We turned to see a burning orange glow coming from the source of rumbling, the very sight sent shivers down my spine. Legolas drew his bow aiming at the glow in confusion and probably (something he would never admit) fear. He released his iron grip from the bow upon realizing that an arrow would have no effect on the approaching danger.

The fiery orange glow over took the darkness of the mine and the thundering grew louder as the... being proceeded to approach us.

Gandalfs eyes held a look of dread and knowing of the approaching evil. Boromir murmured in a bare whisper, “What is this new devilry?”

Everyone was trembling even Aragorn, Boromir and Legolas, the hobbits eyes grew wide and they hid behind us, watching through the cracks of our bodies.

Gandalf closed his eyes and opened them again, his face grim, “A Balrog. A demon of the ancient world. This foe is beyond any of you… Run!" He shouted the last word and we took off running as fast as our legs would carry us.

Aragorn and I gathered up the hobbits and ran further behind.

“Quickly!” Boromir led the way down to a short staircase leading up to a large dimly lit area of the mines. However, being as impulsive as ever, he nearly fell down a broken stair. If in which case that was to happen, he would have plunged headlong, down a very long distance into a murky-looking rushing stream, leading down to who knows what.

Thankfully, Legolas being fast and at this point in time not so graceful, grabbed him just in time and pulled him back. The hobbits knocked into each other and nearly all four of them fell. I hurriedly pushed them back and helped Boromir to his feet.
