It was an elegant winter night. The sky shone bright with the flames of thousands of stars. The forest shone it's vibrant coat of white snow, glistening with the moonlight as if it where communicating with it. The pine trees all looked gorgeous, but the tree that outshone them all was the maple tree.

It was Christmas Eve. A young boy - around the age of five - was sitting right next to the maple tree with another child (also five years old) wearing a red cap and blue gloves. The two sat there reading a lovely book given to the young boy by his grandfather. On the cover was a couple and three maidens. the book did not have a title, for it had been rubbed off by someone else.

"The End!" Said the young boy closing the book.

"That was a really good story." Replied the other child.

"Wasn't it?! It's one of my favorites!"

The child gave a slight pause, "Do you think we'll ever fall in love like the prince and princess in the story?"

The young boy begins to ponder, "Hmmm, who knows?"

"I hope I do, I'd want that person to be a very nice person." Said the child struck with the idea of falling in love with someone.

The boy stared at the child, he found the child's smile to be quite joyful, yet sad; for some odd reason it pleased the boy.

The boy then stood up and started digging in his pockets. He then took out an amulet lock and a key. He extended the key to the child saying, "here! You keep the key and I'll keep the lock. When we're older, we'll unlock the lock, and once we do....we'll uhhh....we'll....we'll get married!"

The child looked at him with a joyful expression, "really?!"

    "Really!" Said the boy.

    "Alright! It's a promise!"

The young child stood up as he reached out and locked pinkies. That was the last time they would see each other for a very long time.
