Chapter 6
Slipping into a pair of baggy jeans and a grey sweatshirt, I went through the case file one more time.
“Amber come on we have to go.” Seth’s voice rang through the house. I threw that file back into the chest.
*8*8*8*
“Seth did you think that maybe Chelsea was dating a teacher and she said she wanted to end it but he said no. That is how she disappeared.” I questioned.
We had stated walking through the grass in the back of our ‘house’. Sandals, jeans, sun shining, 70 degrees, and Seth walking hand in hand with me. The only bad thing was instead of talk about say a relationship we were talking about a dead 17 year old. Yeah being an agent had its downfalls but with all the training and stuff they give us it is totally worth it.
“You have been read those mystery books again?”
I smiled. He knew my favorite thing to do in my spare time was to read mystery books no matter what I was doing.
“Was it James Patterson’s book?”
And yes James was my favorite author. I have read almost every one of his books but he just has so many there is no way I could read them all.
“Seth I was reading a mystery but not by James.” He squeezed my hand as we sat down on an old wooden bench near a pond. Fog rose near the edges creeping along the ground near our feet. The wind was whispering to the trees and the trees were laughing back. We stayed on the bench acting like normal teens our age not being on high alert like normal. It felt nice I was glad that we got to take a break. I looked up at Seth. He brown hair almost looked black due to the setting sun. His eyes sparkled like the pond. I sighed. “How come we decided to become spies?” I thought aloud leaning my head on his hard chest.
“I remember being 7 and my mom and dad died in a fire. They were firefighters you know. They had saved three little girls and were going back for their dog. The house collapsed. I was a messed up little ten year old. My aunt couldn’t take care of me so she thought she was sending me to a military school. Low and behold. I ended up here. You remember that day we met?”
“Yeah.” I laughed at the memory.
“That was only my second day at the academy. I had gotten into a fight with some ginger about something stupid. I don’t really remember. The nurse was freaked out that I had a scratch on my forehead. I ran away and found that tree. She never looked up there. That is why when I saw you funning away from her. I showed you up that tree. Why did you?”
“My parents disappeared in Africa for a mission trip. I was bounced from foster home to foster home. I found one that I really liked. One day Kyle and I were walking into school. We went to a K-12 school. It was our first day of 4th grade I think. Being raised in foster care you learn to stand up for yourself. Kyle was being picked on for his glasses. I told them to quite. ‘Oh look Kyle has a little girlfriend that has to stand up for him. Like she could help you now.’ I punched one of them in the eye and the other ones ran and told the principle. Who told my foster family. They never wanted to listen to my side of the story. Kyle liked me but he was scared if he told on those boys they would beat him up so they never told anyone. My foster family told my social security worked that they could not have me because I was a danger. Then every family that heard said they would not take me. They told me I was going to a military school in Virginia. I wound up in Florida running from the nurse for getting in a fight with a 17 year old for my pizza.” I sighed. “Tough life.”
I heard something in the bushes to our left. So long normality, Hello spy instincts.
“Did you hear that?” Seth asked.
“Hear what that noise. I do believe it’s you ‘Dad’”
“Jonah I told you they would hear us.” I heard a girls voice.
“Give up guys we know you are there.” Seth sighed.
Christie and Jonah got up.
“What are y’all doing here?” I asked southern twang coming out.
“We were told to check up on you guys….. The boss wants to make sure you aren’t getting to off topic.” I through my head back and groaned very un-lady like.
“For goodness sake we can’t be normal teenagers for ten minutes. I get that we have a big mission and all but we are supposed to be blending in not sticking out like a sore thumb.” I never really understood that saying but it seemed to fit right there.
I got up and sprinted to my room and slammed my door. Sinking into my bed I drifted off into a dreamless sleep….. or so I thought.
“You never really knew what happened to your parents. I guess since you are going to see them soon I guess I should tell you. They never went to a mission trip they died on this mission. The one that you are on right now. I guess they never wanted you to know how they earned their money. They lived a lie. They never wanted you to hurt. They told the recruiters that you were not going to get involved. Little did they know that because you were the child of the two best spies they had that you would be the best ever. Seth was only the backup child. His parents were the second best in their class. Making him the second most wanted child in America. People would have done anything to get their hands on you two. Even kill your parents and say they died in a fire or got lost on a mission trip. The only people that were not glad about your appearance…. My clan.” I spit in his eye. He was the ugliest person I had ever seen. “You see we have people everywhere. Seth. You remember how he got shot at that school. He survived. Just decided to join us so we could have fun teaching you a lesson. He told me that he was always tiered how you always beat him in everything and wanted to see you lose for once.” Seth walked in a smug smile on his face.
“You said you loved me.” I let our looked into the depths of his soul. Not and once of regret only smugness.
“I said that. True. Who said I meant it?” He grinned at the tears now flowing freely down my face.
“I just want to go back. I want you to hold me again.”
