Everyone was still and taken aback when Harry snorted. "Of course! You're going there, too, right?"
The old man blinked hard and his blue eyes turned hazel. "As a matter of fact, I don't know where I will be going. What I have to know is, why are you going there?"
All this time, Anda was silent. She was thinking of a way out of here, away from the old man, who although begged for money, creeped her out. Suddenly, the old man leaned all the way back into his seat and tilted his head back. Anda and Harry sat silently, staring at him.
He slowed slid forward in his seat and asked Harry, "Say, boy, you must've been curious about the girl that requested someone to fix their problem!"
Anda stifled a shout of denial and instead, bit her lip in worry. Harry turned to her and seemed surprised. "I'm not sure how to react right now. Actually, I'm going to go with upset and accusing. You sent me on this trip and you didn't even tell me what was going on? Come on, I deserved to know! I wasn't going to fix a sewage for nothing!"
Rolling her eyes, she replied, "Hey, I knew you would've gotten too excited how the girl who reported the problem. It's just like you to be obsessed with girls and forget about the real problem. Besides, I'm right here, like I'm not just sending you on this trip, I'm sending myself, too."
Harry whispered to the old man, "She puts up a good argument."
The old man used his cup to whack Harry's head. "You're bothering me. My point was, did anyone tell you the true reason that you're going there?" He rested his chin on his cane, almost falling off his seat
Anda looked out the window. This old man's interest was a little suspicious. "You know, your interest in our business is a little suspicious," Anda said.
Wow, clever thinking. I'm such a genius, thought Anda.
Wrinkling his spotted nose, the old man replied, "Aye. The real reason that people are hiding from you children is the rats."
Children? We're adults! Maybe he's half-blind. Anda chuckled to herself.
He looks like a rat! He shouldn't be one to talk! Or maybe he is one of the rats, Harry pondered.
"Okay, I got it. Rats mutated into huge monsters, eating too much, producing more than enough waste, clogging all the pipes of humans, and ruining civilization for everywhere!" He cheered.
Anda opened her mouth to disagree, but the old man put up his hand. He had something important to tell them.
Harry and Anda exchanged a glance, then quickly looked away. The old man tapped his cane on the floor. "Those rats; they are real! I remember them now. I used to live in New York; those was the good times!" He took out a cookie from his pocket. "Wait, not the rats. They were disgusting! One day, a long time ago, I was just outside selling newspapers when I heard a sound."
He hunched his back even more. "It was a fast scratching sound! And...and..."
His head fell against his chest. Harry threw his hands in the air. Anda gently prodded the old man's head. With a jolt, he woke up and shouted, "The rats! They were inside the sewers! I knew it was them; I don't know why! God, I tried throwing newspapers at them, but they just ate it! Ten dollars wasted! Maybe I should've thrown a guy's gnomes at the rats; he had too many of them anyway."
Anda and Harry nodded their heads in anticipation. The old man looked at them. "It was strange! I told people, 'Look at the rats! They're there and they're mutating!' No one noticed. Dumb little pigs just said, 'You crazy old man! It's just a little sewage problem! Call the sewage people and go to a mental ward!' They were big meanies, but I knew better. I did call the sewage fixers, but they're not so smart. I decided to go on a little train trip, afterwards."
