I had talked myself out of it.

Not really knowing why, I spent Saturday coming up with a million reasons not to see Tyler again. It’s a habit of mine. After the first date I find a reason not to want a second date. I’m awful I know. It’s like second nature to me to run from potential commitment. Only once before did I allow myself to get attached.

I just couldn’t be in a relationship. Not like that, not again. I knew that it had only been one date, but isn’t it better to nip it in the bud rather than get attached?

That’s what I told myself anyway.

As luck would have it Tyler hadn’t contacted me all weekend, so I didn’t have to deal with that situation just yet. I had decided to let it sit for a while. Hang with my friends and study my arse off until I heard from him again, which I knew would be soon.

So the weekend was spent getting drunk with Meg and Jamie.

On Sunday, after a few too many drinks, Jamie admitted to fancying Rachel. Or rather he admitted to wanting to ‘get in her pants’. The conversation went a little something like this...

“What’s Rachel up to this weekend?”

I looked over at Jamie, smirking knowingly, “She’s working, why? Miss her?” I taunted.

He scoffed, “I don’t miss her, just her ass!”

“Oh come on Jamie, admit it you like her. I’ve seen you looking at her” Meg laughed. I guessed she had noticed it too.

Jamie looked at us both in disbelief as we grinned at him, “You guys - especially you Meg -” he added shooting Megan a look, “know that I don’t do relationships, or dates. I think she’s hot and I’d like in her pants. That’s all there is to it. That’s all there ever is to it”.

There was so much conviction in his voice as he said this that I wondered for a moment whether he actually believed that that was all he was capable of feeling.

I just laughed at him and punched his shoulder, “You’re a hopeless case” to which he smirked and said, “you love me that way. My hopelessness totally turns you on” and added a wink for good measure.

I snorted, “Yeah you really float my boat Jamie.” He grinned over at me cheekily.

If I didn’t know how much of a player he was and if I didn’t live with him I might actually like him. He really is very good looking and I could imagine he knew his way around a woman. But as it stood, we were in the friendship zone.

“Well she sure is making you work for it isn’t she” I laughed at Megan’s observation. Rachel had no clue that Jamie was attracted to her. I could tell she was attracted to him but I could also see that she wasn’t about to let herself get carried away. Her self-esteem was too low for that. He would need a big sign saying ‘I want you’ to get her attention.

He murmured an agreement then smirked, determination in his eyes, “Don’t worry, I never fail.”

“I’m more worried about Rachel. Don’t you dare hurt her” I pointed an accusing finger at him. Jamie held his hands up in a show of peace, “I don’t plan to. I plan to do quite the opposite in fact” he winked. I rolled my eyes and grabbed the nearly empty bottle of Jack Daniels, taking a big swig straight from the bottle. As I tipped my head back to chug I fell backwards feeling dizzy.

“Fuck Millie! Are you trying to drink yourself into a coma,” exclaimed Megan as she swiped the bottle from my hands, drinking the remainder. I scoffed, “You’re one to talk. You can’t even look me straight in the face.” I laughed grabbing her face in my hands.
