I stared ahead as I felt sweat collect beneath my hands and onto the steering wheel, so much that when we turned a corner, they slipped right off.
We jolted to a stop right in the middle of the road, and I leaned on the wheel, dragging my (also) shaky hands down my jeans."Don't worry, first time is always bad. Some guys cried on their first job, but you get used to it." Matt commented, throwing a cigarette out of the window.
"Did you?"
"No. But I'm dead inside." He shrugged. "Now hurry, we have places to be, Blonde."
I fixed my hair, and continued down the road. As we turned again, a police car drove past us and I had to bite my lip to prevent myself from screaming. Matt, beside me, remained serene and shockingly calm. "How old are you again?"
"16, why?" He looked to me, a flash of innocence in his eyes. It vanished in seconds. I shook my head.
When Casper called at midnight about a job, I couldn't pass up on the opportunity. With Skye's birthday coming up and my big game, I need cash fast.
I'm not sure of what to expect tonight; especially how things are meant to go down. As far as I'm concerned, the next time my family sees me I could be behind bars.Or with a bullet in my head. A shuddery breath forced its way out of me as I parked outside of the house. "Who are we looking for?"
"Thomas Lancaster. Notice by his house that he is a very wealthy businessman, only that with a sweet tooth for cocaine." Matt held the bag of white powder against him. "You get out first, and go around the back. I'll meet you there."
I didn't reply, simply followed instructions in fear that I would either refuse to or throw up on myself out of fear.
It was dark, dark enough that my pale ass could actually blend into the surroundings. I pushed through a thick maze of plants, finding the glass door to his office. I stopped hesitantly before it, but Matt burst the door open as if it was his own home.
"I was expecting you." And I was expecting a round, elderly man, not somebody perhaps a few years older than my Mom. "But not you?" He walked closer, touching my face lightly. "New guy? I was liking Bennett."
"He had to go, this one is actually smart." Matt said, then placed the bag on the dark mahogany desk beside us, the contents lightly dusting the woods. "I believe you owe us a little something."
"Not quite yet." He licked his finger and dipped it into the bag, sniffing it. "This doesn't smell right."
"That isn't our shit to deal with, you owe us $45,000. So pay." Matt barked at him.
"Only when I get my money's worth."
"Soon, the one thing you'll be getting for sure is a one way ride to the ER." I muttered, and their eyes snapped to me.
"Was that a threat?"
"Make of it what you'd like. Now pay." I stood taller, trying to impose authority. The guy laughed, wholeheartedly, in my face.
"Li-" his laughter interrupted him. "Listen here, Pretty Boy-"
My fist had already touched his cheek by the time it fell upon me. I barely missed a beat. Just like that, Thomas Lancaster was bleeding, eyeing me with wrath clouding his eyes. "I want him out, now! I refuse to pay until Casper contacts me himself!"
As Matt tried to reason with him, my fingers subconsciously curled around a paperweight in the shape of a icosahedron, it's edges sharp against my palm. Thomas Lancaster paced past me again, bordering hysteria.
Something within me snapped; one final waft of his cologne and his voice was all it took for me to swing the paperweight at his head. He collapsed in front of me, now also bleeding from his head.
Matt looked at me astonished. He knelt down, touching his neck. "You killed him."
I fell back upon myself. "Wh-"
"Don't touch anything." He grasped my arm. "Anything you touch comes with us, starting with that paperweight. Hand it here."
I passed him the bloody object and he placed it inside the cocaine bag, shoving it into his hoodie pocket. From the same place, he produced a pair of leather gloves for us each.
"Take down all security cameras and the door handle to the outside."
"Okay." I muttered, frozen with shock.
I killed a person.
As I passed Thomas's body, my feet grazed his hand & I shivered. Perhaps it was the image of a corpse before me that brought my heart near to stopping, but I couldn't help but not feel any kind of remorse towards the man.
Like Matt told me to, I switched off and destroyed all of the cameras as he broke into his safe, perhaps collecting more than actually agreed upon. He stuffed the bag he carried. "What?"
"We can't leave him here." I threw the security cameras outside. "Take his arms."
"Ross, I'm not-"
"What, scared he'll wake up?" I smirked.
"No, of course not." He obeyed very fast and together we buried the millionaire in his back garden. I wiped a bead of sweat.
Matt looked at me. "Let's bounce."
My stress had been replaced by high adrenaline levels. I want to do it again.
The thrill of ending somebody's life was exhilarating - I was on a totally new drug, and Matt seemed to have noticed it, cutting down conversation to the max.
I looked over that, and resorted to just focusing on the road with the $25,000 I carried in my back seat. When I arrived home, the dim counter lights of the kitchen were on, and Mom was sat at the table. Before her were a glass of wine, a calculator and a stack of paper. She held her face in her hands, still.
Only when I set down $15,000 before her did she look up. She drew breath sharply. "What have you done?!"
"Nothing bad, Mom." I walked to the freezer, pouring myself a glass of milk.
"How did you get all of this money?!" She asked shakily, touching the notes as if they were saving her life. "What did you do?"
"Nothing!" I exclaimed. "A friend had a construction job underway and I've been helping him so he gave me a quarter of the pay." I sipped the milk. "Have some kind of faith in me, sometimes."
Mom stood up, her reary eyes set on mine. I walked over, and quickly embraced her into a hug as she began to weep. "I can't thank you enough, baby."
"Then don't." I cooed.
Knowing that this was going to become my new hobby, a smile broke out on my face. I held Mom tighter.
