Song: Faded by Alan Walker (Restrung)

"You were the shadow to my light ... Did you feel us? Another star... You fade away..."

The bright, blurry lights sped above me in an endless pattern, one after another...after another.

I didn't know where I was. I didn't know what was going on. All I heard were the rushed, unrecognizable voices, the sprinting soles of the bottom of their shoes, but the most profound sound of them all, was a faint heartbeat close to my own.

As I returned to my senses, I saw a familiar face among the others. Though it was a blur, I could never mistake those eyes, those dazzling eyes always looking my way.

I felt him urgently grab my hand, his fingers drenched in sweat. But they were still warm. His lips moved to say something, but it only came out stifled. He said something again until every last beat of my heart suddenly stopped...

Until darkness swept over me.

....................

Thinking back, I should have seen it coming. I should have known things were going too well between us. My strong feelings for him blindsided me so badly.

My family and I were nothing but puppets in this sick game of revenge. He never saw me anything more than that.

Almost two weeks had passed since I left that place. The days without him were long and unbearable. But eventually, I convinced myself I was going to be fine without him. In very little time, I learned how to smile again. I learned how to live...No, not live. Survive.

Over time, I started to think about him again. Work was only a temporary distraction because when I came back to Nancy's place, he consumed my thoughts for the remainder of the day. I fought with myself, conflicted whether if I should talk to him. But it ultimately came down to the fact that he never made the slightest effort to look for me, no less talk to me.

As I sat on the guest bed, I scoured through the old photo albums Nancy had in her closet. Some of the slots were filled with pictures of my family and I. The times when we were happier, and things weren't so complicated. As I turned to the next page, my attention fixated on a rare photo. It was one with all of us.

We were at a beach. My parents looked so young back then. Their frozen smiles stilled in time as they watched the three of us, Chris, Eve and I build a sand castle that would later be destroyed by the ocean waves.

"Ally?" Nancy's voice called out into the room. My eyes darted over to the door. I quickly wiped away at my tears before she could see them. She smiled at me, poking her head through the door. "Are you busy, dear?"
