Chapter song: Higher by Erik Gronwall

I watched frozen where I stood as Henry stepped out of the car and walked towards my way. I repressed the urge to smile as he came closer.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, trying to sound casual.

"Don't you have an appointment?"

"How did you know about that?"

He smiled at me. "Does that matter now, Ally. Let's go or you're going to be late."

I narrowed my eyes, wary of his intentions. But now wasn't the time to inquire him. I was already a few minutes behind schedule, and I didn't want to be late to my appointment.

.....

"Dr. Carol will be right with you," the snarky receptionist said. I held onto my tongue as her eyes traveled up and down Henry slowly.

Henry and I found two open chairs in the waiting room. Strangely, there was no one else around in the clinic. I vividly remembered last time I was here alone, there was a young girl. She looked so afraid.

"Are you nervous?" Henry asked me.

"What?" I turned my head to look at him.

"Your legs are shaking."

I looked down at my legs, seeing that Henry was telling the truth. They were shaking. I stopped and cleared my throat just as Henry's hand reached over, gently wrapping his hand around mine.

"It's okay to be nervous, Ally. You don't have to pretend to be strong in front of me."

Before I could think of a reply, the nurse called my name and led us into a room.

Dr. Carol came in a few minutes later and apologized for the time. She noticed Henry by my side and immediately, her face beamed.

"Henry. I'm so happy you could make it here today," she smiled. I couldn't believe it took me this long to realize that this would be the first appointment where Henry would be present. Maybe that's why I was nervous.

Henry shot up from his seat and shook her hand. "I'm sorry I haven't been coming here like I should. I won't make any excuses for my behavior."

"You're here now, and that's all that matters. I'm sure Ally is happy you could join us today," Dr. Carol continued as she smiled at me. I returned the gesture.

"Okay, let's get started and see how the little one is doing." Dr. Carol asked me a couple of questions and then took some routine tests. Everything was normal with the baby which was the biggest relief.

Finally, it was time for the ultrasound, the moment I always looked forward to. It was the only time I got to see my Baby Kale.

As Dr. Carol lifted my shirt when Henry suddenly took hold of my hand. I turned to look at him, but his eyes were so concentrated on the screen, patiently anticipating to see our baby appear on the screen.

Dr. Carol massaged the prober through the cream on top of my belly. It would usually tickle but this time, the pit of my stomach was flipping for another reason. I felt Henry's hand gently squeeze my hand.

We waited patiently for Dr. Carol to locate Baby Kale. Each silent second that passed by without hearing a heartbeat caused me to worry.

"Is the baby okay, Doctor?" Henry asked with a hint of worry.

Doctor Carol kept silent, determined to search for the sound of my baby's life. My thoughts raced at a million thoughts per second thinking there was something wrong. Did I do something wrong?
