The kitchen was a mess. Pots and pans from the bottom cabinets were strewn about the room. I slowly turned around and looked at the mess. Behind me came the sound of pans hitting other pans. I turned around to look at the source of the noise. Rlief flooded through me when I saw who it was.
“What are you doing Kason?” I asked.
“Nothing...” He said, an innocent look on his face.
“You silly little boy. You had me worried out of my mind!”
“Sorry.” He said, getting up and running over to me and hugging my leg. “I love you mommy.”
I picked him up and said “I love you too baby.”
“Kara! Have you found-” Brayden said as he ran into the kitchen. “Kason!” He yelled as he ran up to us and put his arms around us.
“I guess he got bored and decided to play in the kitchen.” I said, looking from kason up to brayden.
Brayden looked around the room. “Holy...” He said, grabbing his hair.
“Oh man up! Its just a little mess.” I said.
“Little? Ha!”
“Calm down. Toddlers get into things. apparently in this safe house they forgot to put safety locks on the cabinets.”
“I take it your used to messes like this?”
I gave him a flat look. “Well duh. I raised him ALONE for the past three years.”
“Oh. Right.” he said scratching the back of his head and looking away. “Well we better get to work.”
I put Kason down on the ground and started helping Brayden clean up the kitchen. “We should probably buy some of those safety locks.” I said.
“Yeah. Hey, why dont you go call Ms. Davis and let her know so she doesn't freak out that we're gone.”
“Alright. I'll be right back.” I went in the living room and got my phone off the coffee table. “Is Ms. Davis there?” I asked the receptionist. “Hey! We're planning on going to the supermarket today. We just wanted to call and let you know we would be gone for a little while. Uh-huh. Okay. Yes, we'll call when we get back. Alright. Bye.”
“We're free to go.” I said walking back into the kitchen.
“Alright.” Brayden said.

“Okay so safety locks for the cabinets and doors is all we need?” Brayden asked, walking into the store.
“No. We also need milk and eggs.” I replied, grabbing a basket and putting Kason in the little seat.
“Alright. I'll go get the milk and eggs. you get the cabinet and door locks. I'll meet you there.” he said.
“O-Okay. Be careful.” I stuttered.
“What? Scared?”
“Me? Ha!”
He gave me one of those 'you can't lie to me' looks.
“Okay. Well maybe just a little.” I said.
He scooped me up in a hug. “You'll be fine. You have your cellphone don't you?”
“Crap.” I muttered.
“You left it at the house didnt you.” I nodded my head. “Well just stay close to the workers okay?”
“I'll try.” I replied, smirking.
He turned around and walked towards the groceries, leaving me alone with Kason. As I was headed to the baby department, we walked by the jewelry and something caught my eye. It was a necklace. One that my mother had given me when I was little. I wore that necklace everywhere. It was simple. Just a heart that said “I Love You” and when you opened it, there were two places for small, heart-shaped pictures.
“Ma'am? Are you okay?” The jewelry cashier asked me.
“What? Oh, I'm fine. Sorry.” I replied, wiping away tears and forcing a smile on my face.
“Its okay. May I ask why you were crying?” she had a sincere look on her face like she actually cared.
“My mom got me a necklace just like this one here when I was little. I wore it everywhere.” I explained, pointing to the necklace.
“What happened to it?” She asked.
“I, uh, lost it when we moved.” I lied.
“Oh.” She said. “Would you like to buy this one?”
“Yes. Thank you.”
I bought the necklace and continued on to the baby department.
“Kara! I've been looking everywhere for you! Where have you been?!” Brayden yelled as I walked down the isle with the locks.
“Oh sorry. I found a necklace that looked exactly like the one my mom gave me a long time ago.” I said. A tear rolled down my face.
“Oh Kara.” he said, wrapping his arms around my body.
“I'm fine.” I said, wiping away more tears.
“Mommy don't bw sad.” Kason said.
“As long as I have you I wont be. I promise.” I said, kissing the top of his head.
“Hey!” Brayden said.
“You too.” I said, smiling.
Brayden's phone started ringing. “Hello?” “Yeah she is.” “Why?” “Okay.” He handed me the phone. “It's for you.”
“Hello?”
“Kara! I'm so relieved to hear you're okay!” Megan said.
“Um, thanks?” I said, confused at what she was talking about.
“Why didn't you ever go to the police when your parents were murdered?” She said.
“What?” I said, wondering why she would ask such a thing.
“Why didn-”
“No, I heard what you said. Why do you want to know?” I said, cutting her off.
“It's important. I'll explain later. I need you to tell me now.” she said.
