Haru's breath puffed out from beneath his rosy cheeks in a fog-like mist. It was cold, very cold. In fact, Haru felt like he was in a giant refrigerator. Rei, Nagisa, and Makoto had dragged him to the local ice-skating rink. This would, hypothetically, be something Haru would be pretty okay with. After all, he enjoyed his friends' company. But there was one problem; Haru had never skated in his life.
This should have been a good enough excuse to tell his friends. Only, he couldn't bring himself to admit to his friends that he didn't know how to skate... He thought it was a little embarrassing that he was the only one out of his friends who didn't know how. These were the things that caused Haru to linger at the entrance of the cold, smooth expanse of ice as his friends all pushed right on without hesitation.
Makoto, noticing that Haru hadn't yet moved from his spot, quite gracefully, circled back around to him as Rei and Nagisa skated on, giggling.
Makoto looked at Haru, who was studying his skates. "Haru," he said, "are you going to come skate with us?" When Haru didn't answer, he tried again. "What's wrong?" Makoto asked him. Haru finally met his eyes and Makoto understood. "Oh. Haru, why didn't you tell me you couldn't skate?" Haru blushed and looked back at the ground-- or ice, rather. "It's really quite easy," Makoto said, then paused. "I can teach you." Makoto reached out to him. Haru looked back up at Makoto's gentle smile and took his hand.
Makoto lead Haru, carefully, onto the ice. Haru began to slip and Makoto grabbed his shoulders to steady him. "Are you okay?" Makoto asked him. Haru nodded, watching Makoto. They gazed into each other's eyes for a second. Makoto blushed this time, looking away. Haru reached up and cupped Makoto's face in his hands, keeping his balance surprisingly well. Makoto looked him in the eyes again. Both of their eyes began to close as their lips slowly gravitated towards one another. They kissed. All of their worries melted away. They pulled apart and looked into each other's eyes again and, suddenly, everything began to make sense.
"Water," Haru said, seemingly out of nowhere, looking back at the ground.
Makoto, confused asked him, "What?"
"Ice is a lot like water." Haru told him. "Smooth."
Makoto laughed and drew Haru into an embrace. "Yeah," he agreed. "It is a lot like water."
